Job Description

Job Purpose

To provide support, coordination and development of environment, health and safety programs.

Responsibilities and Duties

Support Environmental, Health and Safety Programs

  • Assist in the development and implementation of EHS programs including SOPs, policies and training as required.
  • Participate in the assessment of EHS programs for regulatory compliance and best practices.
  • Participate in workplace audits and investigation of incidents and concerns.
  • Review applicable legislation, guidelines and codes and inform EHS Manager of applicable changes.
  • Maintain and document compliance with EHS standards and programs.
  • Monitor hardcopy EHS records from Business Units to ensure action items are assigned to an employee, completed, closed out, and records are filed.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Provide Coverage for Hazardous Waste Technician

  • Ensure, prepare and update procedures for hazardous waste management and chemical handling including, sampling, weighing, and storing chemical containers
  • Be responsible for receiving, identifying, sorting, and preparing for disposal of waste solvent and hazardous materials
  • Verify hazardous wastes and classify them for disposal
  • Dispense hazardous materials from bulk containers to smaller individual containers
  • Prepare information for purchase requisitions or orders
  • Be responsible for registering new waste with Ministry of Environment
  • Ensure shipments are picked up on time

Working Relationships

  • Collaborate with Production, Supply Chain and Logistics, and Quality to develop and implement functional Health and Safety programs.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering with Chemistry knowledge.
  • Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is an asset.

Competencies

  • Working knowledge of relevant regulations (i.e. OHSA and Regulations, TDG, IATA, 49 CFR, 29 CFR, etc.)
  • Experience in safety, environmental or compliance with an understanding of EHS management systems, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong administrative and organization skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient with MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
  • Possess the ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Mainly office and laboratory/manufacturing setting
  • Fully on-site position
