Job Summary
The Dr. Pieter Cullis Laboratory, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Dr. Anna Blakney, in the Michael Smith Laboratories, at the University of British Columbia will be looking to hire a Project Coordinator to join the team. The incumbent is responsible for managing a 4-year Canadian Biomedical Research Fund (CBRF)-funded research project that aims to optimize RNA vaccines for pandemic preparedness. The incumbent is responsible for managing various research studies and equipment procument that will take place at University of British Columbia and partner institutions (Simon Fraser University, Dalhousie University, industrial collaborators). Responsibilities also include managing budgets, preparing reports, and ensuring effective communication flow between collaborators, CBRF, and the multi-national co-investigators to ensure project outcomes are met.

Organizational Status
The Project Coordinator will report directly to the Principal Investigators, Dr. Pieter Cullis and Dr. Anna Blakney. Works closely with lab members on issues regarding lab staffing and shared resources. Will frequently interact with trainees in the Cullis and Blakney Labs as well as other CBRF labs. Supervises and checks the work of research staff assigned to the CBRF project. Frequently liaises with staff at UBC central agencies (ORS, Finance); co-investigators in Canada; industry partners; and the funding agency (CBRF). Work is performed predominantly at the Life Science Centre and occasionally the Michael Smith Laboratories at UBC.

Work Performed

Manage complex research studies and collaboration between different project teams, including:

  • Develops and implements the project work plan, goals, objectives, milestones, and timelines in collaboration with PI and Co-PIs and communicates these to the various project teams as appropriate
  • Develops and monitors project budgets, prepares financial reports and manage all project financial activities.
  • Prepares interim and final financial and progress reports for submission to funding agency.
  • Develops scientific and clinical research project protocols, ethical review applications and standard operating procedures in collaboration with the PI.
  • Assures the continuous operation of the project through the identification and acquisition of resources, material and equipment.
  • Works with the scientific teams to develop data collection strategies. Oversees data collection and reviews data quality.
  • Works with industry partners to coordinate the developed technologies with the necessary preclinical studies.
  • Prepares, composes, edits, and proofreads scientific manuscripts in collaboration with research team members.
  • Liaises with various stakeholders, departments and institutions as necessary.
  • Facilitates project meetings with project team members (local, national, international), and others involved with the projects.
  • Performs other duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the supervisors will result in delays and quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC. Exercises excellent judgement, responsibility and initiative in performing financial and administrative tasks. Inappropriate judgment could hinder the research program from achieving its deliverables resulting in the termination of funding, could damage relationships with collaborating academic research teams, industry partners/stakeholders, and could negatively impact the reputation of the research labs, CBRF, and UBC.

Supervision Received

Reports to the Principal Investigator. Works under general direction within established policies, procedures and standards. Work reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards.

May be required to provide direction to other staff members; oversees the academic work of and demonstrates techniques to students as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience with maintaining day-to-day operations in the lab. High degree of motivation, enthusiasm, organization, and initiative. Ability to work independently and with other lab personnel. Effective oral and written communication. PhD preferred. Experience in coordinating research teams, projects and grants at the post-secondary level or industry level. Excellent knowledge of scientific research management and administration in an academic or industry setting. Excellent knowledge of university, government funding agency, and industry research policies, requirements, and best practices. Ability to communicate scientific knowledge between disciplines and industries. Ability to effectively use word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and statistical software at an intermediate level. Strong leadership and ability to work effectively, independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to interact productively and professionally with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Strong organizational, time management and project management skills. Must be able to work independently as well as contribute actively and collaborate openly as a team member.
