Role Overview

The Energy Services team is tasked with optimizing the company's risk-adjusted earnings through exceptional portfolio management and market advisory services. This team is divided into three primary groups: (i) Portfolio Management, responsible for trade strategy development and execution; (ii) Client & Asset Support, focused on managing customer agreements and asset onboarding; and (iii) Market Analytics, which handles reporting and the creation of analytical tools to support the portfolio management team.

The Power Market Analyst position is situated within the Market Analytics group, collaborating closely with the West trading team (including ERCOT, WECC, AESO) to develop proprietary tools, processes, and systems that facilitate decision-making and reporting within Energy Services and Liberty.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement models to monitor, forecast, or assess risk metrics on the asset portfolio, as directed by the trading group with support from the Energy Services team.
  • Collect and analyze key industry intelligence, identify emerging trends, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Execute standard recurring tasks for the trading team, such as providing forward pricing to plant managers and business development teams.
  • Assist in the scheduling and encoding of trades, including financial swaps, derivatives, and congestion management.
  • Conduct fundamental-based price simulations for numerous price nodes to support trading operations using commercial software.
  • Support the publication and maintenance of existing executive reports.
  • Provide validation and commentary on existing reports, including daily, weekly, and monthly analyses.
  • Produce high-quality analyses by independently gathering relevant data and synthesizing conclusions as directed by internal stakeholders.
  • Enhance tools and queries to acquire wholesale power market data as required.
  • Oversee and assist with database monitoring and data validation tasks.
  • Create automation tools to streamline routine analysis-based decision-making processes.
  • Assist in data validation and the establishment of automated data validation checks.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, and SQL (Snowflake) is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with fundamental market simulation tools is advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of energy markets, products, and trading instruments, including swaps, options, and futures, is essential.
  • Experience in deregulated energy markets or trading environments is preferred.
  • Experience analyzing market fundamental drivers in ERCOT, CAISO, and AESO is a plus.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills and strong modeling capabilities are required.
