Role Overview

The Energy Services division is focused on optimizing the company's risk-adjusted returns through exceptional portfolio management and market advisory services. This division is segmented into three primary areas: (i) Portfolio Management, which includes the Trading Team responsible for strategizing and executing trades; (ii) Client & Asset Support, which manages customer agreements and asset onboarding; and (iii) Market Analytics, which handles reporting and the development of analytical tools to support the portfolio management team.

The Power Market Analyst position is situated within the Market Analytics sector, collaborating closely with the West trading team (covering regions such as ERCOT, WECC, and AESO) to create proprietary tools, processes, and systems that facilitate decision-making and reporting within Energy Services and Liberty.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement models, as guided by the trading group and supported by the Energy Services team, to monitor and evaluate risk metrics associated with the asset portfolio.
  • Collect and analyze key industry intelligence, identify emerging trends, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Conduct routine tasks for the trading team, including providing forward pricing to plant managers and supporting asset strategy and business development.
  • Assist in the scheduling and execution of trades, including financial swaps and derivatives.
  • Perform fundamental-based price simulations for a wide range of price nodes to support trading operations using commercial software tools.
  • Contribute to the publication and maintenance of existing executive reports.
  • Provide validation and insights from existing reports on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • Deliver high-quality analyses by independently sourcing relevant data and synthesizing conclusions as directed by internal stakeholders.
  • Enhance tools and queries to acquire wholesale power market data as required.
  • Support database monitoring and data validation efforts.
  • Create automation tools to streamline routine analysis and decision-making processes.
  • Assist in data validation and the establishment of automated data validation checks.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, and SQL (Snowflake) is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with fundamental market simulation tools is advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of energy markets, products, and trading instruments, including swaps, options, and futures, is essential.
  • Experience in deregulated energy markets or on a trading floor is preferred.
  • Experience analyzing market fundamental drivers in regions like ERCOT, CAISO, and AESO is a plus.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills and strong modeling capabilities are required.
