Oakville, Ontario, Canada Liberty Full time

At Liberty, we are committed to hiring individuals who are passionate about delivering exceptional service to our clients. Our culture is entrepreneurial, innovative, and results-oriented. Here, your inherent abilities and accomplishments will thrive in a collaborative environment that values teamwork, trust, and ongoing development.

Objective
The Energy Services team is dedicated to optimizing the company's risk-adjusted earnings through outstanding portfolio management and market advisory services. This team is divided into three segments: (i) Portfolio Management, which focuses on developing and executing trading strategies, (ii) Client & Asset Support, which manages customer agreements and asset onboarding, and (iii) Market Analytics, responsible for reporting and the creation of analytical tools to support the portfolio management team.

The Power Market Analyst for the Western Region will be part of the Market Analytics group, collaborating closely with the Western trading team (including ERCOT, WECC, and AESO) to develop proprietary tools, processes, and systems that facilitate decision-making and reporting within Energy Services and Liberty.

The ideal candidate will possess a foundational understanding of North American power markets (such as ERCOT, CAISO, and AESO) and experience with financial instruments like swaps, derivatives, and virtual products. Advanced analytical skills and a deep understanding of analytical methodologies, particularly in handling large datasets, are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement models, as directed by the trading group and supported by the Energy Services team, to monitor, forecast, or assess risk metrics related to the asset portfolio.
  2. Collect and analyze key industry insights, identify trends, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
  3. Execute standard recurring tasks for the trading team, including providing forward pricing to plant managers and supporting asset strategy and business development.
  4. Assist in the scheduling and processing of trades, including financial swaps and congestion management.
  5. Conduct future-oriented fundamental price simulations across multiple price nodes to support trading operations using commercial software.
  6. Contribute to the publication and maintenance of existing executive reports.
  7. Provide validation and commentary on existing reports, including daily, weekly, and monthly analyses.
  8. Deliver high-quality analyses by independently sourcing relevant data and synthesizing conclusions as directed by internal stakeholders.
  9. Enhance tools and queries to gather wholesale power market data as necessary.
  10. Support database monitoring and data validation efforts.
  11. Create automation tools to streamline routine analysis and decision-making processes.
  12. Assist in data validation and the establishment of automated data validation checks.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  2. A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  3. Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, and SQL (Snowflake) is highly desirable.
  4. Familiarity with fundamental market simulation tools is advantageous.
  5. The successful candidate should have a basic understanding of energy markets, products, and trading instruments.
  6. Experience in deregulated energy markets or trading environments is preferred.
  7. Experience analyzing market fundamental drivers in ERCOT, CAISO, and AESO is a plus.
  8. Advanced spreadsheet skills and strong modeling capabilities are essential.

We are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce. If you are enthusiastic about this opportunity and feel you may not meet all the qualifications, we encourage you to explore this role further.

Liberty is an equal opportunity employer and values the unique backgrounds, diversity, experiences, perspectives, and talents of each individual.
