About This Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a dedicated and experienced Certified Palliative Medicine Physician to enhance our multidisciplinary palliative care team. This role is vital in providing compassionate care to patients and their families across various settings, including home, hospital, and hospice. You will be part of a collaborative team serving diverse communities, ensuring comprehensive support for patients in need of palliative care.

As a member of our supportive palliative care team, which includes nurses, social workers, administrative staff, and fellow physicians, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality care. Your responsibilities will also include collaborating with family physicians and medical specialists, utilizing a shared-care model to ensure the best outcomes for patients.

In addition to your clinical duties, you will have the opportunity to engage with Dalhousie University, contributing to the education of medical students and residents, as well as participating in research initiatives.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing inter-professional initiatives in Palliative Care.
  • Providing care across various settings, including hospitals, in-patient palliative care units, homes, long-term care facilities, and assisted living residences.
  • Following up with patients post-consultation through appropriate visits and phone support, ensuring collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • Working closely with the palliative care team to advocate for patients.
  • Prescribing and administering medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
  • Mentoring medical students and family medicine residents from Dalhousie University.
Expected Hours
  • Full-time position (1.0 FTE).
  • Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day.
  • 1 FTE receives 6 weeks of paid vacation/CPD annually.
Qualifications
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Accredited training in Palliative Medicine or a Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care.
  • Proven experience in a shared care model across multiple care settings.
  • Demonstrated interest in the palliative approach to care and capacity building with colleagues.
