About This Position

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a dedicated and skilled Palliative Care Physician to become a vital part of our multidisciplinary palliative care team. This role offers an opportunity to provide compassionate care to patients and their families across various settings, including home, hospital, and hospice environments. The successful candidate will engage with communities throughout the region, ensuring that quality palliative care is accessible to all.

As a member of our supportive palliative care team, which includes nurses, social workers, and administrative staff, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for patients facing serious illnesses. This position not only involves direct patient care but also emphasizes collaboration with family physicians and medical specialists through a shared-care model.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Palliative Care Physician include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing inter-professional initiatives in Palliative Care across various healthcare faculties.
  • Providing comprehensive care in diverse settings, including hospitals, in-patient palliative care units, home care, long-term care facilities, and assisted living residences.
  • Following up with patients post-initial consultation, ensuring appropriate visits, phone support, and collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • Working closely with the palliative care team to ensure cohesive patient advocacy.
  • Prescribing and administering necessary medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
  • Mentoring medical students and family medicine residents from Dalhousie University.
Work Schedule
  • Part-time position at 0.5 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE).
Required Qualifications
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Certification eligibility with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Accreditation in Palliative Medicine or a Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care.
  • Proven experience in a shared care model across multiple healthcare settings.
  • A strong interest in the palliative approach to care and capacity building with colleagues.
