About This Opportunity:

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Palliative Care Physician to become a vital part of our multidisciplinary palliative care team located in the scenic South Shore of Nova Scotia. This permanent full-time position will involve providing comprehensive care to patients and their families in various settings, including home, hospital, and hospice environments. You will collaborate with a collegial team serving communities in the region, ensuring that high-quality palliative care is accessible to all.

The regional palliative care team includes palliative care nurses, social workers, an administrative assistant, a program manager, and fellow Palliative Care Physicians. In addition to clinical responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to engage in collaborative consultation with family physicians and medical specialists, utilizing a shared-care model. You will also have the chance to connect with Dalhousie University for teaching medical students and residents, as well as participating in research initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of inter-professional initiatives in Palliative Care across various faculties.
  • Provide care across multiple settings, including hospitals, inpatient palliative care units, homes, long-term care facilities, and assisted living residences.
  • Follow patients post-initial consultation with appropriate visits, phone support, and collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • Work closely with the palliative care team to ensure comprehensive patient support.
  • Act as an advocate for patients and their families.
  • Prescribe and administer medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
  • Mentor students and residents from Dalhousie University during their longitudinal integrated clerkship.

Expected Hours:

  • Full-time (1.0 FTE)
  • Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day
  • 1 FTE receives 6 weeks of paid vacation/CPD annually

Qualifications:

  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
  • Accredited training in Palliative Medicine or a Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care.
  • Demonstrated experience in a shared care model across diverse care settings.
  • Proven interest in the palliative approach to care and capacity building with colleagues.
