Overview of the Position

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a dedicated and skilled Palliative Care Physician to become part of a vibrant, multidisciplinary palliative care team located in the picturesque South Shore region of Nova Scotia. This role is for a 0.5 FTE locum to permanent position, focusing on providing compassionate care to patients and their families in various settings, including home, hospital, and hospice environments.

As a member of our collegial team, you will serve communities in the area, collaborating with healthcare professionals across three hospitals: South Shore Regional Hospital, Queens General Hospital, and Fisherman's Memorial Hospital, which features a newly established 5-bed palliative care unit. Our supportive team comprises palliative care nurses, social workers, an administrative assistant, a program manager, and fellow Palliative Care Physicians.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of inter-professional initiatives in Palliative Care across various faculties.
  • Providing care across multiple settings, including hospitals, inpatient palliative care units, home care, long-term care, and assisted living facilities.
  • Following up with patients after initial consultations through appropriate visits, phone support, and collaboration with other healthcare providers, ensuring a supportive approach for both family physicians and patients.
  • Collaborating closely with the palliative care team to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Acting as an advocate for patients, ensuring their needs and preferences are prioritized.
  • Prescribing and administering medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
  • Mentoring medical students and family medicine residents from Dalhousie University.
Work Schedule
  • Part-time position at 0.5 FTE.
Required Qualifications
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Eligibility for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
  • Accredited training in Palliative Medicine or a Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care.
  • Proven experience working within a shared care model across diverse care settings.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the palliative approach to care and capacity building among colleagues.
