Certified Palliative Medicine Specialist

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a dedicated and skilled Palliative Care Physician to enhance our multidisciplinary palliative care team. This permanent full-time position involves providing comprehensive care to patients and their families in various settings, including home, hospital, and hospice environments. Our service area encompasses a range of communities, ensuring a broad impact on patient care.
As part of a collaborative team, you will work alongside palliative care nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, including two additional Palliative Care Physicians. Your role will include not only direct patient care but also consultation and support for family physicians and medical specialists through a shared-care model.
The ideal candidate will hold a CCFP certification (or equivalent) with a certificate of added competence in Palliative Care, or FRCPC certification with relevant qualifications in Palliative Medicine. Preference will be given to those with extensive experience in palliative medicine. Candidates must also be eligible for specialty licensure in Nova Scotia and possess the ability to travel independently between various care settings.
ResponsibilitiesKey responsibilities include:
- Contributing to the development and implementation of inter-professional initiatives in Palliative Care across multiple faculties.
- Delivering care across all settings, including hospitals, in-patient palliative care units, home care, long-term care, and assisted living facilities.
- Providing ongoing support to patients post-consultation through regular visits and collaboration with other healthcare providers.
- Collaborating closely with the palliative care team to ensure holistic patient advocacy.
- Prescribing and administering necessary medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
- Mentoring medical students and family medicine residents from Dalhousie University.
- Full-time position (1.0 FTE)
- Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day
- Annual allocation of 6 weeks of paid vacation/CPD
- Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
- Eligibility for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
- Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
- Accredited training in Palliative Medicine or a Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care.
- Proven experience in a shared care model across diverse care settings.
- A strong interest in the palliative approach to care and capacity building with colleagues.
