ABOUT THE ROLE
Lead Archaeological Operations Manager | Atlanta, GA | Southeastern US
VHB is seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Archaeological Operations Manager to oversee our Atlanta office's archaeology team within the Environmental Services Division. This role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth functioning of the team, focusing on the precision of technical documentation, adherence to timelines, and the coordination of efforts to fulfill project compliance requirements.
We are in search of an innovative thinker who possesses a deep passion for archaeological and historical preservation. Collaborating closely with engineers, designers, planners, and clients, VHB is dedicated to safeguarding our collective cultural heritage across numerous offices along the East Coast.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct, lead, author, and/or review archaeological assessments, Cultural Resource Assessment Surveys, and Archaeological Resource Identification Surveys across various investigation phases.
- Supervise and manage a diverse team of professional archaeologists.
- Oversee project scope, timelines, and budgets for cultural resource initiatives.
- Perform archival and historical research to support project objectives.
- Evaluate archaeological site significance in accordance with established criteria.
- Analyze proposed infrastructure developments and their potential impacts on identified cultural resources.
- Develop recommendations for the preservation, avoidance, or mitigation of impacts to significant cultural resources.
- Facilitate regulatory compliance with federal, state, and local agencies.
- Provide support to other VHB departments and regional offices in archaeological and historic preservation planning.
- Conduct artifact analysis and assist in curation activities.
- Create field survey and geographic maps utilizing the ESRI software suite.
- Review and respond to proposals, scopes of work, and project plans.
- Enhance and maintain client relationships.
- Mentor and guide junior and mid-level archaeologists in the field.
Essential Skills and Attributes
- Extensive expertise in coordinating and managing archaeological investigations.
- Familiarity with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and understanding of its expectations is preferred.
- Knowledge of NEPA, ARPA, NHPA, and NAGPRA regulations.
- Experience in implementing survey methodologies for archaeological investigations in the Southeastern region.
- Self-driven and detail-oriented with a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- In-depth knowledge of American history and Southeastern archaeology.
- Capability to identify complex cultural resource challenges and devise effective solutions.
- Motivated to lead and mentor fellow professionals.
Qualifications
- A master's degree (or higher) in anthropology, archaeology, or a related discipline is required.
- Registered Professional Archaeologist designation is preferred.
- Must comply with the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology.
- A minimum of 11 years of professional experience in cultural resource management is required.
- A valid U.S. driver's license is necessary.
