Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada University of Saskatchewan Full time

Qualified applicants with a focus on Acting/ Directing with a strong specialization in TheatreHistory are invited to apply for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Drama in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan to begin July 1, 2024.

As the successful candidate, you will be active as an artist/scholar/educator in all aspects of the life and work of a department that is embarking on a dynamic phase of renewal. In addition to teaching acting classes across all areas of the undergraduate acting program, you will be responsible for collaborating with your colleagues to develop an integrated approach to acting and production in the department. This collaboration will include a strong commitment to directing a production in the Greystone Theatre season in rotation with other faculty members. Your expertise in acting and directing will be a valued asset to rebuilding the department's strong training in established theatrical practices, while your specialization in theatre history will open new doors to research, self-production and new/emerging work in our theatre season. Additional strengths in one or more of these areas will be seen as assets to a revitalized new curriculum: Indigenous theatre and performance, playwriting and dramaturgy, postmodern and post-colonial theory and Western Canadian theatre and performance history.

The successful candidate will: supervise student research projects; initiate, lead and participate in research activities; compete successfully for external funding to support this research program; and undertake relevant administrative activities, including meetings and committee work.

The Department of Drama is a dynamic department with a key focus on the B.F.A. in Acting and Design and the wîcêhtowin Theatre Program (WTP); this innovative certificate program launched in 2015 strengthens the department's interdisciplinary connections with other University units engaged in Indigenous educational, cultural, artistic outreach; enhances its already-strong community and professional partnerships; and enriches department programming on all levels. In addition, the department offers a three-and four-year B.A. program and M.A. program opportunities on a special case basis. Our students regularly serve internships with local professional theatres to enhance their training and transition to the professional theatre. As the oldest Drama Department in the British Commonwealth, our program has an outstanding track record of community engagement, experiential learning, and a long-standing commitment to producing excellent graduates dedicated to celebrating, building, and transforming the theatre community. Many of our alumni have graced the most prominent national and international stages and have made highly successful careers for themselves in the theatre and motion picture industry. Many others have played a vital role in developing drama in the schools and communities of Saskatchewan or successfully aspired to careers as scholar/practitioners at universities in Canada and abroad. The department is playing a key role in the formation of the School for the Arts and will join that School on July 1, 2024.

The College of Arts & Science offers a dynamic combination of programs in the humanities and fine arts, the social sciences and the sciences. There are over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the College and 300 faculty, including 9 Canada Research Chairs. The College emphasizes student and faculty research, interdisciplinary programs, a focus on Indigenous engagement, as well as community outreach and international opportunities.

The University of Saskatchewan's main campus is situated on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. The University of Saskatchewan is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a city with a diverse and thriving economic base, a vibrant arts community and a full range of leisure opportunities. The University has a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and scholarly activities and offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to a student population of over 27,000.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a PhD or an M.F.A. in Theatre. Intensive training and applied experience in Acting or Directing is essential. Preference will be given to candidates who have a strong specialization in Theatre History. Consistent with the department's commitment to developing excellence in teaching, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong theoretical and applied grasp of a range of methodologies and approaches focused on acting, directing and/or theatre history. We particularly invite applications from colleagues who combine professional theatre experience with previous experience teaching studio, seminar and lecture classes at a post-secondary level.
