Position Title: Assistant Professor in Food Safety and Microbiology
Department: Food and Bioproduct Sciences
The Department of Food and Bioproduct Sciences is on the lookout for a passionate and innovative individual to fill the role of full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Food Safety and Microbiology. This essential position aims to enhance food safety practices concerning the detection, traceability, and sustainability of the food supply.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Establish a comprehensive research program that aligns with the department's vibrant and research-focused environment.
- Collaborate effectively with fellow researchers both within the department and across various disciplines.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses, employing a teacher-scholar approach.
- Engage in administrative responsibilities and participate in departmental and university processes.
The ideal candidate will join a cohort of newly appointed professors within the strategic focus area of Sustainable and Digital Agriculture, a priority research domain rich in collaboration and innovation opportunities.
The Department comprises ten faculty members with diverse research interests, including:
- Food nutrigenomics
- Brewing
- Food/environmental microbiology
- Food chemistry and omics
- Pathogen detection utilizing machine learning and AI
- Food nanotechnology and emulsion science
- Food enzymology
- Lipid biotechnology
- Microbial bioproducts
- Quality and utilization of proteins, lipids, and starches
- Bioprocessing
- Value-added crop utilization
Facilities available to support research and teaching include a fermentation pilot plant, bioprocessing pilot plant, food processing pilot plant, sensory laboratory, product development kitchen, and analytical and molecular biology suites.
The department boasts a strong tradition of research excellence, hosting approximately 70 active graduate students and securing significant external research funding. We offer four undergraduate degree programs in Food and Bioproduct Sciences, Food Science, Food and Nutrition, and Food Industry Management, alongside graduate programs in Applied Microbiology and Food Science.
The university is recognized as a leader in applied research and scholarship, focusing on four primary themes: Plants and Animals; Food, Feed and Bioproducts; Environment and Ecology; and Business and Applied Economics. The college has a long-standing reputation for teaching, research, and outreach, significantly contributing to the agriculture and food sectors.
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Applied Microbiology, Food Microbiology, or Microbial Biotechnology (or a related field) and possess expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Food safety
- Novel detection techniques for microbial pathogens
- Remote sensing/digital imaging
- Risk assessment and hazard management
- Molecular microbial ecology of food systems
Applicants should demonstrate a strong or emerging research portfolio, complemented by an excellent academic record. Post-doctoral experience in relevant research and proven effectiveness in classroom instruction and mentorship are advantageous. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to foster productive relationships with faculty and stakeholders, are essential.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing food safety research critical to Saskatchewan and Canada, with opportunities for collaboration with various research entities focused on sustainability. Access to extensive research and analytical facilities across the campus and city will be provided, including those from industry partners.
Salary Range: The salary band for this position is between $99,945 and $120,099, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision care plans, pension plan, life insurance, long-term disability, and wellness programs.
