The Department of Food and Bioproduct Sciences is in search of a dedicated professional to fill the role of a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Food Safety and Microbiology. This essential position aims to enhance food safety concerning the detection, traceability, and sustainability of the food supply.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish a comprehensive research program within a dynamic and research-focused department. Collaboration with researchers both within and outside the department will be crucial. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of courses in our undergraduate and graduate programs, employing a teacher-scholar approach, while also undertaking administrative responsibilities and engaging in departmental and university collegial activities.
The preferred candidate will be part of a cohort of newly appointed professors within the strategic domain of Sustainable and Digital Agriculture, a key research area with abundant opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and impactful work.
The Department of Food and Bioproduct Sciences comprises ten faculty members with diverse research interests, including food nutrigenomics, brewing, food/environmental microbiology, food chemistry and omics, pathogen detection utilizing machine learning and AI, food nanotechnology, emulsion science, food enzymology, lipid biotechnology, microbial bioproducts, and bioprocessing. Facilities available include a fermentation pilot plant, bioprocessing pilot plant, food processing pilot plant, sensory laboratory, product development kitchen, and teaching laboratories, along with access to analytical and molecular biology suites to support both research and educational endeavors.
The college is recognized as a leader in applied research and scholarship, focusing on four primary themes: Plants and Animals; Food, Feed and Bioproducts; Environment and Ecology; and Business and Applied Economics. With a century-long legacy of teaching, research, and outreach, the college continues to play a significant role in advancing the agriculture and food sectors.
The University of Saskatchewan's main campus is situated on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. The institution is located in a city known for its diverse economic base, vibrant arts scene, and extensive leisure opportunities. The university is renowned for its excellence in teaching, research, and scholarly activities, offering a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to a student body exceeding 26,000.
This position necessitates a Ph.D. in Applied Microbiology, Food Microbiology, or Microbial Biotechnology (or a related field), along with expertise in one or more of the following areas: food safety, innovative detection methods for microbial pathogens, remote sensing/digital imaging, risk assessment and hazard management, or molecular microbial ecology of food systems. The ideal candidate will possess a strong or emerging research portfolio and an impressive academic record. Post-doctoral experience in relevant research and demonstrated effectiveness in classroom instruction and mentorship are advantageous. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to foster productive relationships with faculty and stakeholders, are essential.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing food safety research critical to Saskatchewan and Canada, with opportunities for collaboration with others engaged in sustainability-focused research. Access to research and analytical facilities across the campus and city, including those from various government and industry partners, will be available.
Salary for this position falls within the following range: Assistant Professor: $99,945 to $120,099.
