Job Overview

The General Manager is responsible for leading the entire operation of a CARSTAR facility, ensuring its success in all areas of business. This individual must possess strong management abilities and expertise in the Auto Body trade.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and report the profitability of the facility on a monthly basis.
  • Review the Profit & Loss statement with staff to ensure everyone is working towards a common goal.
  • Determine and correct financial areas of concern for the facility; regularly evaluate business performance by monitoring key metrics such as estimates written, closing ratio, gross profit margin, overhead budget, and net profit.
Establishing Financial Goals

The General Manager will establish company long-term and short-term goals to ensure business direction is met from a monetary and professional standpoint. This includes:

  • Establishing company profit goals that reflect a standard overall gross profit, as well as performance in other areas.
  • Continually reviewing operating expenses of each vehicle repaired.
  • Establishing company closing ratios and standards to proactively pursue sales goals.
  • Establishing estimate and sales targets using identified profit goals and closing ratio targets as a basis.
  • Establishing and monitoring profit margins and gross sales targets for production.
  • Establishing and monitoring an overhead budget that does not exceed 15% of total sales, reflecting controlled operating expenses.
Day-to-Day Operations

The General Manager will:

  • Review closed repair orders for quality, reporting, and management issues.
  • Participate in monthly Business Group meetings and share ideas on how the group can work better together to reach company goals.
  • Maintain local licenses and permits required to operate the business.
  • Provide backup for administrative associates and ensure administrative tasks are distributed based on staff skills.
  • Monitor store quality by continually inspecting and observing methods of repair in progress.
Human Resources and Safety

The General Manager will be responsible for:

  • Hiring, training, development, corrective action, and termination of all associates at the facility.
  • Holding daily, weekly, and monthly store meetings to train and inform associates of upcoming events and projects.
  • Resolving all complaints and disputes tied to the facility, including associate disputes and customer-related disputes.
  • Ensuring all associates receive required safety training as part of their orientation process.
  • Identifying, establishing, and monitoring standards for departmental performance; reviewing departmental profitability reports daily to set corrective action for substandard work and low-performance areas.
  • Evaluating employees on an ongoing basis to identify and assist low performers and improve the entire staff; implementing a yearly performance appraisal process, setting goals for improvement, and offering training opportunities.
  • Maintaining all Canadian safety standards.
Customer Service

The General Manager will produce CSI scores that meet or exceed established standards and follow up on substandard CSI cards. They will also strive to improve levels of customer service and satisfaction, insurance company relationships, sales, and promotional efforts.

Salary Range

$60,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on experience and location.
