Position Overview:

The North America Battery Technology Centre (BTC) is on the lookout for an Equipment Maintenance & Calibration Engineer. This pivotal role involves the upkeep and calibration of laboratory instruments and equipment. The successful candidate will work closely with various laboratory stakeholders to develop a systematic maintenance and calibration timetable. Furthermore, this position will coordinate with both internal teams and external service providers to ensure preventive maintenance, repairs, and calibrations are conducted efficiently for all equipment utilized in the battery laboratory, thereby enhancing the lab's operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Initially, the focus will be on training, planning, documentation, and launching the laboratory operations. The Equipment & Calibration Engineer will pinpoint preventive maintenance tasks, collaborate with equipment suppliers to create maintenance plans, and delineate both in-house and outsourced maintenance strategies.
  • The role will also encompass equipment calibration, working alongside Test Engineers and the Lab Quality Engineer to identify calibration needs. This includes developing a calibration timeline and specifying the content for both in-house and outsourced calibration efforts.
  • Additionally, the Equipment Calibration Engineer will establish work procedures that comply with existing safety regulations for all standard maintenance and calibration processes. A comprehensive database tracking maintenance and calibration statuses will also be managed by this role, along with the publication of maintenance and calibration schedules within the laboratory.
  • Once the laboratory is operational, the Engineer will oversee daily maintenance and calibration activities. This includes managing the schedule, executing the maintenance and calibration strategy, implementing corrective measures, generating calibration reports, and optimizing maintenance and calibration intervals based on statistical data analysis.

Additional Duties:

  • Completion of all required training and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Management of equipment maintenance and calibration planning, notifications, and execution.
  • Addressing repair and unplanned calibration requests from internal laboratory clients.
  • Conducting analysis of calibration measurement uncertainty.
  • Supporting the Lab Quality Engineer in implementing the laboratory's quality management system, ensuring that maintenance and calibration documentation and processes align with quality system standards.
  • Establishing and managing spare parts inventories.
  • Maintaining up-to-date training records.
  • Escalating issues to management as necessary.
  • Tracking maintenance and calibration analytics and providing regular reports to management.
  • Supervising maintenance and calibration tasks performed by in-house skilled trades and external contractors.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in laboratory or manufacturing equipment maintenance and calibration.
  • Hands-on experience in calibrating standard equipment parameters, including voltage, current, and temperature.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory tools and instruments.
  • Understanding of measurement uncertainty principles.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems, such as ISO 17025 or 9001.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; keen attention to detail.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency and practical experience with measurement uncertainty practices.
  • Prior experience with ISO 17025 accreditation processes.
  • Experience with electric vehicle battery testing equipment or similar high voltage, high power systems.
  • Experience in unionized work environments.

Essential Attributes:

  • Relevant experience in equipment maintenance and calibration management.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with internal partners (lab engineers, unionized technicians) and external service providers.
  • Accountable and customer service-oriented.
  • Knowledgeable about laboratory quality systems and calibration processes.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant job experience, as outlined above.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for meetings.
