Position Overview:

The Faculty of Science and Technology at Vancouver Island University offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Science program featuring a diverse array of Majors and Minors, as well as diplomas and certificates. We are committed to providing exceptional educational experiences in foundational courses that encompass various disciplines including biology, chemistry, computer science, fisheries and aquaculture, geology, mathematics, physics, forestry, and resource management and protection. This opportunity is ongoing as we seek qualified sessional faculty across multiple subject areas to support our tradition of high-quality education.

Key Responsibilities:

The Science and Technology Faculty is looking for qualified candidates to:

  • Instruct lower-level (100 and 200-level) courses.
  • Develop and prepare course materials.
  • Provide both individual and group instruction.
  • Offer student support and guidance.
  • Design and implement assessment strategies.
  • Evaluate and grade student submissions.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors within the department.
  • Engage actively as a member of the instructional faculty.

Applicants should possess the necessary experience and expertise in teaching as well as in the relevant subject areas they wish to instruct. Please indicate in your application the specific courses you are qualified to teach based on your professional and/or teaching background.

Qualifications Required:

Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and student success, showcasing their scholarship and service to the institution. Successful applicants will engage in various activities beyond the classroom, including:

  • Providing student support.
  • Participating in institutional, faculty, and departmental committees.
  • Engaging in professional development activities relevant to their disciplines.

Educational Background:

For disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics, a Doctoral degree in a related field from an accredited institution is required. Candidates with a Master's degree and relevant teaching or industry experience may also be considered.

For Forestry, a Master's Degree in natural resource management or equivalent, or a Bachelor's degree with five years of relevant work experience in British Columbia is necessary. Candidates should be capable of performing instruction and fieldwork in typical coastal forest conditions.

For Geology, a Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution is required, with a Doctoral degree and a valid Class 4 driver's license preferred.

For Resource Management and Protection, a Master's degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution or a Bachelor's degree with five years of relevant work experience in government or the private sector is essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must.
