Position Overview:

The Public Education Coordinator plays a crucial role in advancing educational initiatives focused on STEM disciplines. This position is responsible for delivering engaging programs and managing logistics to enhance public understanding of science and technology.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Implementation and Management: (60%)

  • Execute K-12 educational programs, ensuring all logistical aspects are effectively managed.
  • Facilitate guided tours of science and technology facilities, while organizing exhibits at various locations.
  • Lead interactive demonstrations and educational activities, maintaining necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Communicate information regarding programs and events; oversee social media platforms and promotional materials.
  • Support off-site educational activities as needed.

Program Development: (20%)

  • Design educational programs and resources that align with institutional academic goals and K-12 curriculum standards.
  • Create public education initiatives and materials that interpret STEM-related topics effectively.
  • Collaborate with community groups and organizations to foster engagement consistent with institutional missions.
  • Produce interpretive materials, exhibits, signage, and digital media.

Program Coordination: (20%)

  • Assist in supervising and training students and volunteers, ensuring quality standards are upheld.
  • Maintain and update the program website.
  • Manage booking systems, process registrations, and respond to inquiries.
  • Oversee a volunteer database, coordinating opportunities and communications.
  • Support the maintenance of educational display systems and assets.
  • Handle retail sales and admissions, including financial reconciliations.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, or a related field from an accredited institution is required. A background in marine science with five years of relevant experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Experience in proposal writing and curriculum development.
  • Proven track record in delivering public education and K-12 programs.
  • Familiarity with British Columbia's educational curriculum requirements.
  • Experience in managing social media platforms.
  • Skills in developing interpretive materials and organizing events.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and other relevant software.
  • Clearance from a Criminal Records Review Program for working with children and vulnerable populations.
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification (may be obtained post-employment).
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

A teaching diploma or Master’s degree is desirable.
