Position Overview:

The Faculty of Science and Technology at Vancouver Island University is dedicated to delivering a Bachelor of Science program encompassing a diverse array of Majors and Minors, as well as diplomas and certificates. We are committed to providing exceptional educational experiences in foundational courses (100- and 200-level) that encompass subjects such as biology, chemistry, computer science, fisheries and aquaculture, geology, mathematics, physics, forestry, and resource management and protection. This opportunity is ongoing as we seek qualified sessional faculty across various disciplines to uphold our tradition of high-quality education.

Responsibilities:

The selected candidates will be responsible for instructing lower-level courses, developing course materials, delivering individual and group instruction, offering student support, designing and implementing assessments, grading student submissions, maintaining accurate records, collaborating with fellow instructors, and actively participating in the faculty community.

Applicants should possess relevant experience and expertise in both teaching and the specific subject areas they wish to instruct. It is essential to indicate in your application the courses you are qualified to teach based on your professional and educational background.

Qualifications:

Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, learning, and student success through scholarly activities and institutional service. Successful applicants will engage in various activities beyond the classroom, including student support, participation in faculty and departmental committees, and involvement in professional development aligned with their disciplines.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants should exhibit a strong emphasis on teaching and student learning, maintain subject relevance, and adapt to diverse learning styles and backgrounds. A proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment is essential, along with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in educational settings.

Specific Subject Requirements:

  • Biology, Chemistry, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics: Doctoral degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution, or a Master's degree with applicable teaching or industry experience.
  • Forestry: Master's degree in natural resource management or equivalent, or Bachelor's degree with 5 years of relevant experience; ability to conduct instruction and fieldwork in typical coastal forest conditions.
  • Geology: Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Resource Management and Protection: Master's degree in a relevant discipline or Bachelor's degree with 5 years of pertinent experience in government or private sectors; excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
