Position Overview:

Vancouver Island University is in search of enthusiastic nursing educators to teach a diverse range of courses (including some online) within the Practical Nursing (PN) program across various campuses. This role involves engaging in a multitude of teaching and learning experiences in clinical, laboratory, and classroom environments.

Key Responsibilities:

The PN instructors will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and delivering course content effectively;
  • Designing and evaluating student assignments and assessments;
  • Facilitating the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical application.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative faculty environment focused on student-centered education. Instructors are expected to promote student achievement, create engaging learning experiences, and provide academic guidance to students.

Additionally, instructors will engage in activities beyond the classroom, including participation in departmental and faculty meetings, and contribute to program development related to curriculum and administrative planning.

Required Qualifications:

Educational Background:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution, with current registration in good standing with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM);
  • Completion or progress towards the BC Provincial Instructor Diploma Program or its equivalent, or a commitment to complete this training within a maximum of two years;
  • A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) designation from an accredited institution, also with current registration in good standing with BCCNM, which qualifies the individual to teach clinical and laboratory courses.

Professional Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of recent experience in medical, surgical, and gerontological nursing;
  • Familiarity with practice environments in Central Vancouver Island, including community health, gerontology, and acute care;
  • Ability to respond effectively to a diverse student body;
  • Strong understanding of the roles and responsibilities of LPNs within the healthcare system;
  • Proficiency in utilizing information technology in educational settings;
  • Awareness and understanding of Indigenous knowledge and cultural practices.

A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are required, as some positions may necessitate travel to various practice locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited institution;
  • Experience in teaching adult learners in a post-secondary context;
  • Familiarity with educational technology and learning management systems (such as D2L).
