The REACH Program at Evergreen Treatment Services is dedicated to assisting individuals facing homelessness and behavioral health challenges in achieving stability and enhancing their quality of life. Our mission is to promote community health and safety through outreach, relationship-building, healing interventions, and advocacy for individuals who use drugs. REACH offers outreach-based care coordination, multidisciplinary clinical services, and support for accessing and maintaining housing.
This vital role contributes significantly to the mission of ETS.
Position Overview:
The Community Engagement Specialist in Harm Reduction will support our Integrated Care Milieu Team by delivering compassionate overdose response and fatality prevention through the establishment of deeper connections with individuals actively using drugs in and around our drop-in spaces, while intentionally incorporating harm reduction best practices into our milieu work.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Engagement & Milieu Management:
- Develop trusting relationships with clients living outdoors and using drugs near the REACH office, focusing on harm reduction practices.
- Stay informed about community resources and provide information and referral services to clients and staff as necessary.
- Guide new clients through the milieu, outlining their rights and responsibilities.
- Assist in orienting new staff to the milieu and support all REACH staff in applying trauma-informed harm reduction best practices.
- Collaborate with Care Managers to establish self-care and crisis intervention plans for all REACH clients.
- Help maintain order in the office by managing the front desk and checking clients into the system.
- Facilitate the flow of clients through the REACH milieu space.
- Coordinate and facilitate support groups, training sessions for clients and staff, outings, special events, and other group activities.
Overdose Prevention & Crisis Response:
- Educate clients on safer drug use practices, overdose prevention strategies, and accessing harm reduction resources.
- Act as the liaison to the REACH Drug User Health Team, providing support and coordination for site-based drug checking services.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for responding to overdoses and behavioral health crises occurring in and around the REACH office.
Documentation and Administrative Duties:
- Document all relevant client and community interactions in the system according to program requirements.
- Participate in REACH Program staff meetings and other mandatory meetings.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; undergraduate degree preferred.
- A minimum of three years of direct client service experience in mission-driven programs serving the unhoused community.
- Familiarity with local resources, community services, harm reduction, and overdose prevention principles.
- Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Employees may be exposed to illicit drug residues and fumes or other bio-hazardous materials while performing job functions.
- Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
