**Role**:
From commerce to community organizations, the field of Property Assessment and Taxation offers a unique perspective into the fabric of Alberta’s economic and social networks. If you are looking for an opportunity to put your skills in public policy into action, the Assessment Strategic Policy team is the place for you.

There are two temporary one-year positions available in the Assessment Strategic Policy team in the Assessment and Property Tax Policy Branch.

Reporting to the Manager of Assessment Strategic Policy, this role is responsible for strategic policy advice, development, and legislation related to property assessment and taxation.

On a typical day you will:

- Learn something new, be immersed in interesting topics and problems to solve, and be relied upon to contribute your expertise.
- Communicate, advise, and engage the public, assessment professionals, industry professionals, non-profit organizations, and municipal officials.
- Lead the development, production, and modernization of guides, regulations and legislation, associated training initiatives and communication documents used by Alberta municipalities, and the Provincial Assessor.
- Research, analyze, and report on the assessment and property tax system, including assessment and tax policies in other jurisdictions, recent tribunal and court decisions, and providing related support and information to municipalities.
- Undertake cross-ministry consultation as required to ensure alignment with government priorities and initiatives.
- Support legislative matters moving through the government decision process including Ministerial Orders, Orders-in-Council, and delegations of authority.
- Identify and respond to emerging issues. Develop programs, policies, and legislative changes to be considered by the Minister of Municipal Affairs.
- Support other divisions of Municipal Affairs, and other departments across government, on policy initiatives involving assessment and property tax policy.
- Ensure all information and advice given to assessment stakeholders is consistent, appropriate and conforms to government policy, the Municipal Government Act and related regulations.

**Qualifications**:
**Required**:

- University graduation in the following fields (however, not limited to): Business, Public Policy, Political Science, Law, Economics, Engineering, or Science OR Professional accreditation (which on minimum takes 4 years to complete) through the Alberta Assessors’ Association (Accredited Municipal Assessor of Alberta (AMAA)), the Appraisal Institute of Canada (Accredited Appraiser Institute of Canada (AACI)), or the International Association of Assessing Officers (Certified Assessment Evaluator (CAE)).
- 4 years of progressively responsible related experience.- Ability to identify, define, research, and analyze issues related to policy.
- Ability to develop options to address policy issues and draft related policies and legislation.
- Ability to implement and evaluate new or amended policies.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Able to provide concise briefings, reports, and presentations to senior management and various stakeholder groups.

**Assets**:

- Working knowledge of the Government of Alberta’s legislative and regulatory policy development and approval processes.
- Working knowledge of the Government of Alberta’s policy cycle.
- Working knowledge of municipal operations, particularly in the area of assessment and taxation.
- Proficient use of computer systems with the ability to analyze large amounts of data and transform it into useful information and visualization for decision-making.
- Project management.
