The **Research and Innovation Branch** establishes evidence-informed, high value innovation in policy and practice through health evidence reviews, policy and strategy development, and strategic alliances with stakeholders, including Alberta Health Services (AHS) and other health system partners (e.g., Alberta Innovates (Al), professional colleges, industry, etc.).

**Major Branch functions include**: (1) providing evidence to support innovation implementation and health policy development; (2) working with health system, academic and industry partners, including Strategic Clinical Networks, to support research and accelerate innovation in health care; (3) provision of in-department training through the Centre of Organizational Learning; (4) overseeing health research and innovation policy and strategy development; (5) leading and supporting development of policy and strategy that crosses multiple divisions; (6) providing strategic guidance and funding for cancer care and research; and (7) developing a departmental approach to appropriateness within AHS and other health providers.

The **Health Innovation Partnerships and Strategy (HIPS) Unit** leads the development and evolution of the Department's strategic vision and policy initiatives related to health research and innovation. HIPS leverages partnerships and collaboration with stakeholders and industry to integrate innovations into Alberta's health care system and works with stakeholders to ensure the research and innovation ecosystem in Alberta is responsive to health and health system needs. HIPS also provides analysis and advice on emerging issues in the life science and health research sectors and supports health innovation and commercialization initiatives.

The **Health Evidence and Policy (HEP) Unit** leads health innovation work in the areas of cancer, secondary data access, diagnostic imaging, health research ethics and multiple sclerosis. In collaboration with delivery partners and external health expertise, HEP is also responsible for evidence-based assessments of technologies, services, models of care, policies, funding models, and governance models through the Health Evidence Review (HER) program.

**Role**:
This position provides support for strategy and policy development; committee participation and support; project management; opportunities in health sciences research and innovation; and special projects. Currently special projects include the Diagnostic Imaging Action Plan and the Virtual Care Strategic Policy Framework. HER projects span a broad range of topics, from care pathways for non-surgical musculoskeletal conditions to identifying considerations for developing race-based data collection. The Policy Advisor works closely with partners and clients to develop project plans, acquire experts (e.g., technical, research and/or clinical) to provide advice on reviews and supports implementation tracking. The Policy Advisor also prepares responses to action requests, including those related to research, innovation, and partnerships with relevant entities.

**Qualifications**:
A **University degree** in a related field (preferably in Public Policy, Public Health Sciences, Social/Policy Sciences, Public Administration, Health Care or Health Care Administration, or a related discipline), and a** minimum of four (4) years **of progressively responsible project planning and management, and experience in policy development and/or health and/or a healthcare setting.

**Required** experience includes:

- Demonstrated ability to conduct research, develop policy options and recommendations, and conduct critical analyses
- Project management experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Broad knowledge regarding Alberta’s health system, policy, legislation, and funding of health services
- Demonstrated ability of understanding government policy development framework and processes
- Experience in the health care system and/or health research and/or the medical device or pharmaceutical industry
- Knowledge of the assessment, appraisal, and evaluation process for health technologies and/or health services and/or models of care
- Work experience in public policy
