**Overview**:
Giyak Mishkawzid Shkagmikwe Inc. (GMS) is the newly formed economic development corporation for Atikameksheng Anishnawbek (AA), a First Nation whose traditional territory lies in the Sudbury basin. GMS was formed as a fully owned, for-profit corporation, to develop and manage business ventures, and provide economic benefits to AA. This is a legacy opportunity to join the early phase of a start up corporation positioned to create wealth and wellbeing for Anishinabek people in the spirit of reconciliation.
GMS is looking for an experienced Business & Development Manager (BDM) to grow, monitor, and manage GMS existing commercial projects and joint ventures, as well as to research, assist and make recommendations to the CEO on new venture opportunities. This is both an existing project and joint business management and a new business development role.
GMS’ current ventures portfolio includes:
- The development of an industrial park (largely still in the design phase)
- The development of a commercial building
- A joint venture with a mining development firm (as a non-operating partner)
- A joint venture with a construction and transport firm (as a non-operating partner)
- A joint venture with a drilling company (as a non-operating partner).
About GMS:
GMS was established as an independent for-profit corporation by Atikameksheng Anishnawbek (AA) to develop commercial business and economic growth opportunities based on the strategic land and rights-based advantages, as well as to provide business capacity building and support to band members and businesses.
GMS carries out its business consistent the following objectives:
1. Create long term and sustainable wealth for the AA community.
2. Identify, assess, and execute on land-based business and revenue generating opportunities.
3. Provide professional management of head leased lands and identify the best and highest value uses for these lands, and policies for tenant selection.
4. Incorporate high levels of Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) in all business practices and transactions.
5. Help and identify contracting and job opportunities for AA members.
About the Role:
AA has substantial reserve, claimed lands, and territorial rights that it can develop for commercial purposes. This includes the right to be accommodated for the impacts of third-party activities on its traditional territory. Accommodation often happens through agreements with project developers which, afford economic opportunities to AA and affiliated companies - such as preferential access to contract bids, jobs, training, and sponsorship.
The Business & Development Manager will be paramount in developing commercial opportunities in the Sudbury Basin by seeking and managing opportunities for GMS joint ventures and AA businesses. These may include subcontracting opportunities, development and leasing of land and equipment, new ventures, etc. The BDM will also help foster employment and training and other economic capacity building support for AA band members and businesses.
As GMS is a nascent organization, the BDM will be required to provide broad and flexible support to the CEO. This may include preparing funding proposals, recruitment and supervision of new staff or interns, and other events and projects.
**Responsibilities**:
The BDM’s primary responsibility is to manage existing businesses and agreements as well as to identify, secure and grow and new opportunities.
Additional and specific responsibilities for this position are as follows:
- Establish and develop GMS business management unit
- Create a system and monitor the performance of existing GMS business joint ventures
- Develop a thorough understanding of GMS partners and band member businesses capabilities to deliver on projects.
- Create a capabilities database of GMS and AA businesses.
- Identify contracting opportunities in the territory by identifying and engaging with procurement at major new mining, energy, infrastructure, remediation, projects etc.
- Assist in the marketing, management, and commercial development of the CZ Business Park and multipurpose commercial building.
- Develop and implement business strategies for GMS’s business entities.
- Identify and pursue strategic business opportunities (i.e. funding, partnerships, optimization, etc.) that support and promote business development for GMS.
- Develop, manage, and support the business and marketing strategy of GMS’s business and commercial operations.
- Set and achieve business targets, provide coaching, and monitor staff (eventually)
- Present business projections, revenue, and expense reports and realistic forecasts to the management team.
- Track and report revenue data for GMS business entities.
- Support the development and creation of the GMS Annual Report
