The Role

Maintains on-street and station transit infrastructure, and passenger amenities. Coordinates bus detour routes, service interruptions, and notifications due to construction and community events.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance and assigns work to summer students. Assists Assistant Manager to administer contracts (e.g., snow removal, waste collection, notice installation, bus stop notices).
  • Coordinates maintenance for passenger amenities (e.g., garbage removal, snow clearing, bus stops, concrete landing pads, sidewalk connections, shelters, benches, schedule information, stations, graffiti removal). Liaises with staff, area municipalities, and contractors for same.
  • Assists in researching and providing recommendations for new bus stop locations.
  • Administers the annual bus stop improvement program. Coordinates sign installations. Provides input on same.
  • Maintains bus stop inventory database, assesses issues, and identifies locations for repairs.
  • Coordinates signage for transit detours and service interruptions. Assesses impacts of temporary road closures on transit routes. Plans minor detour routes, and consults with Planning staff on major detour routes. Plans and implements bus stop relocations. Produces and distributes detour information in the Division and to the public.
  • Participates as a member of the transit operations committee.
  • Provides technical expertise and information regarding transit facilities and amenities. Represents the Division on internal and external committees and with community stakeholders.
  • Produces and arranges installation of schedule information at bus stops.
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints from customers, property owners, community stakeholders, and the public.
  • Monitors the bus stop maintenance budget, and provides input to supervisor on related needs. Submits work orders.
  • Coordinates bus infrastructure installations, relocations, and improvements, and traffic signal timing.
  • Performs related duties, as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of transportation planning, traffic engineering, and engineering design and construction standards and procedures, normally acquired through a diploma in transportation engineering technology or equivalent, plus progressively responsible related experience.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and related by-laws and legislation (e.g., Highway Traffic Act, accessibility).
  • Analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills to maintain databases; determine construction feasibility, and coordinate maintenance with stakeholders; and recommend bus stop locations and facilities.
  • Human relations, communication, and customer service skills to respond to inquiries and complaints from customers, community stakeholders, property owners, and the public; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read correspondence, reports, contracts, manuals, and site plans. Ability to write correspondence, policies, and procedures.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, Access, MapInfo, and customer service and program databases.
  • Must have a valid Class G driver's license (or G2 with 3 years of driving experience) and acceptable driving record to operate Regional vehicles. Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
