At the BC First Nations Justice Council, we are seeking a dedicated Staff Lawyer to join our team in Victoria, BC. This full-time position offers a competitive salary range of $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience.

We take pride in reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and supporting nations as they move towards sovereignty over justice. Our team is passionate about providing world-class legal services and programs that cater to the unique needs of Indigenous communities.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in litigation, preferably with 1-5 years of experience in criminal defense. Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures is essential, along with the ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, able to work independently, and possess excellent communication and organizational skills.

This role involves representing Indigenous clients facing criminal charges, with a focus on reducing incarceration rates. You will also work closely with clients to access necessary social supports, including housing, employment, physical, and mental health services. As part of our team, you will collaborate with Indigenous communities, service providers, and government agencies to ensure clients receive culturally safe and indigenized programs and services.

The staff lawyer will be responsible for various tasks, including:

  • Providing legal representation for criminal and child protection matters
  • Advocating for diversion protocols and alternative dispute resolution processes
  • Working with resource workers to provide wrap-around services
  • Maintaining documentation and client files
  • Compiling statistical data and collaborating with government agencies

You will report directly to the Provincial Director of the Indigenous Justice Centres. We offer an extended benefits package, including health and dental coverage, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans. A valid driver's license and willingness to travel are required.
