About the Opportunity
VSAC is looking for an Indigenous Counsellor based in Victoria, B.C, working on a 4-day or 5-day workweek.
Reporting to the Counselling Supervisor, this role is focused on supporting Indigenous survivors of sexualized violence through individual and group counselling, case consultation, and community engagement. You will also work closely with the Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC) to provide culturally grounded support to clients, while also extending counselling services to non-Indigenous clients based on availability.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conducting intake assessments and referrals for clients at VSAC and VNFC
Providing individual and group counselling to Indigenous and non-Indigenous survivors
Supporting clients in understanding trauma and developing coping strategies
Participating in the Indigenous Response Network in monthly meetings, and providing emotional support as needed
Collaborating with VSAC team members in peer support, case consultation, and clinical consultation
Maintaining accurate records for all services provided
Assisting with walk-in support, access-line response, and SART calls
Developing effective links with relevant community agencies
Scheduling clients, maintaining documentation, and preparing for group sessions
Engaging in public education and prevention work
Supervising and supporting student interns in group facilitation or as assigned
Actively contributing to a healthy work environment with a focus on cultural humility and safety
About You
To qualify, you will need a Master’s Degree in counseling, social work, or equivalent experience, with a preference for Indigenous specializations. A minimum of two years of direct counseling experience is also essential. Direct experience supporting Indigenous survivors of sexualized violence is an asset.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
Familiarity with local Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ nations
Experience integrating culturally grounded approaches to healing
Experience with group facilitation techniques
Knowledge of trauma related to Day and Residential Schools, Indian Hospitals, and other colonial institutions
Background in providing community-based services through cultural humility and safety
As our ideal candidate, you will demonstrate empathy, compassion, and a reconciliation-focused mindset, fostering safe, trusting relationships and embodying relationality in every aspect of your work. You bring exceptional communication skills, a strong ability to work collaboratively within a team, and the capacity to organize and prioritize effectively. Your commitment to cultural humility, along with a feminist, anti-oppressive lens, will ensure empowering support for clients.
This is a meaningful opportunity for a trauma-informed counselor with a deep understanding of Indigenous communities and the impacts of colonization, looking to make a positive impact in an inclusive, supportive environment.
