Are you a person who is a self-starter, with a passion for working with a growing non-profit organization that supports Indigenous peoples experiencing homelessness? The Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society (ACEHS) is seeking an Aunty for SPAKEN House to work with the Indigenous Street Community and support those who recently transitioned into culturally supportive housing.
**Position Type**: Full-time, 40 hours per week.
**Wage**: $27
**Start Date**: Immediately
**Deliverables**
Reporting to the House Manager, this position will provide one-on-one support and mentorship to the Family Members residing at SPAKEN House. The Aunty will work with the team to develop a warm, welcoming, and culturally safe environment with a sense of family and community for the Family Members. The Aunty offers a decolonized approach to harm reduction. The Aunty will also have an opportunity to pick up Support Worker shifts if necessary.
- Maintain respectful, effective, open, and honest communication with the Family Members, co-workers, and House Manager
- Follow all House policies and procedures
- Encourage Family Members to follow house policies around hygiene and cleaning.
- Familiarize Family Members with the environment and guidelines for living communally
- Provide support with conflict resolution between Family Members when required.
- Drive Family Members to and from appointments
- Participate in all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions
- Support cultural activities in the house and encourage Family Members to attend.
- Provide one-on-one support as assigned by House Manager
- Work towards safety and prevention regarding substance use, health concerns, hoarding, etc.
- Support the Family Members to book and attend medical and other appointments
- Support the Family Members to attend land-based healing opportunities including overnight camps where possible
- Advocate for the needs of the Family Members
- Communicate with the Indigenous Street Community Advocate regarding referrals and support
- Liaise with House Management team
- Support grocery shopping for with 2-3 different Family Members each week
- Work one-on-one with the Family Members to develop life and wellness plans
- Support the Kitchen Coordinator in cooking and prep when required
- Perform other related duties as required
**Education and Experience required**:
- 1-year related experience working with vulnerable peoples and or providing care.
- Preference given to those who have worked with Indigenous peoples and have training/ education in relevant Indigenous studies.
- Valid First Aid Certification
- Consent to the Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check for Working with Vulnerable Adults
- Preferred Naloxone Overdose Training and Certification
- Preferred Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification
- Preferred Food Safe Certification
- Experience or personal insights working cooperatively with people with disabilities, lived experience, and addictions considered an asset
- Experience working with non-profit organizations, family support, social services, and Indigenous support services and programs considered an asset.
- ** Required to have class 5 driver's license and working vehicle.**

- Progressive understanding of persistent mental illness, addictions, and other challenges and how these impact people's overall health, well-being, and quality of life
- Ability to work in a holistic, professional, and non-judgmental manner as you are working with a broad range of personalities, needs, cultures, lived experiences and abilities
- Ability to effectively respond and adjust to unexpected events, assess high risk situations, problem-solve, provide crisis intervention, and manage conflict in a culturally supportive manner
- Ability to work independently and effectively respond to and manage competing demands while adhering to deadlines within a fast-paced environment
- Effective written, electronic, and verbal communication skills to facilitate interprofessional collaborative practice, healthy and culturally safe environments, and a respectful workplace for community members, staff, guests and volunteers
- Sound understanding of the intergenerational trauma that occurs as a result of colonization, Residential Schools, Sixties Scoop, and other oppressive systems as well as the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
