About BC First Nations Justice Council

At BC First Nations Justice Council, we are dedicated to reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and supporting Nations as they move towards sovereignty over justice. As a rapidly growing organization with a team of 6 Council members and over 100 employees, we strive to provide world-class legal services and programs to Indigenous communities.

We currently have 10 Indigenous Justice Centres (IJC) across BC, serving Indigenous people and promoting culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services.

Staff Lawyer Role Overview

The Staff Lawyer at our IJC will play a crucial role in representing Indigenous clients facing criminal charges, working closely with them to access legal supports and other social services that address their housing, employment, physical and mental health, and wellness needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide Legal Representation: Offer comprehensive legal representation for criminal and child protection matters to clients who lack access to legal counsel.
  • Advocacy and Diversion: Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system to less intrusive measures, including Indigenous intervention protocols, First Nations Courts, and alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Community Engagement: Develop and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, service providers, probation, crown counsel, and other relevant agencies to ensure awareness of your role and availability.
  • Culturally Safe Solutions: Collaborate with clients, communities, and support teams to develop alternate care plans that prioritize children's safety and well-being, while respecting family and community ties.
  • Program Development: Work with Indigenous, local, provincial, and federal government agencies and service providers to ensure access to culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services that support clients' needs.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Canadian Law Society Membership: Must be a member of a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia.
  • Litigation Experience: 1-5 years of experience in criminal defence, with exposure to MCFD (child welfare) matters an asset.
  • Cultural Knowledge: Familiarity with local and urban Indigenous cultures.
  • Judicial System Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of Canada's Criminal Justice System, including the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Gladue principles, and relevant case law.
  • Child Protection Knowledge: Understanding of British Columbia's child protection system, including the Child Family and Community Services Act and Bill C-92 – An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families.
  • Restorative Justice Knowledge: Familiarity with local agencies offering Indigenous/restorative justice services and support services to offenders, children, youth, and families.
