Employee Relations Specialist

At Scotiabank, we're seeking a highly skilled Employee Relations Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our HR department, you will play a critical role in fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Champion a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  • Independently manage ER/LR cases requiring specialized depth of expertise and knowledge of the Bank's Code of Conduct, HR policies, employment law, and assigned business lines/subsidiaries/countries.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and provide value-added advice and coaching on employment-related issues to employees, People Managers, and HR Business Partners, ensuring global consistency and alignment to established governing regulations, Bank policies, and processes.
  • Conduct formal investigations into allegations of serious misconduct, both independently and/or in collaboration with the Employment Law Group and Corporate Security.
  • Lead employee interviews, often engaging in contentious dialogue to analyze the facts of situations; write investigative reports and present findings and recommendations to Senior Leadership to mitigate legal risk to the Bank.
  • Work in collaboration with HR Business Partners in planning the end-to-end delivery of strategic initiatives, such as reorganizations impacting a large employee population; identify trends and provide insights to Senior Leadership and HR Business Partners to contribute to the HR strategy.
  • Promote and support a seamless and consistent experience for employees and People Managers with ER/LR issues and concerns; update and maintain accurate information in the ER/LR case file to ensure defensibility against potential litigation.
  • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions, ensuring teams meet obligations while respecting operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk, and conduct risk.
Requirements:
  • Post-secondary degree or college diploma in Human Resources, Business, or another related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience in Employee Relations or Human Resources.
  • Proficiency in French is required.
  • CHRP or CHRL designation is considered an asset.
  • Expert knowledge of employment law and labor law within the various countries ER/LR supports.
  • Knowledge of how to read and interpret collective agreements (international).
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to apply sound judgment.
  • Strong conflict and alternative dispute resolution skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including strong report writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to multitask while remaining organized; able to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office products.
