Job Summary
The Laboratory Operations Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our undergraduate laboratories. This includes providing technical support in chemistry and related equipment, ensuring daily operations, and maintaining laboratory safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Prepare equipment and chemicals for course-related experiments in chemistry teaching laboratories.
2. Order chemicals and equipment for course-related experiments in chemistry teaching laboratories.
3. Prepare samples for experiments and laboratory term examinations, as well as standard solutions for qualitative and quantitative analysis of experimental products.
4. Collaborate with the laboratory coordinator and/or course instructor to develop and test new experiments.
5. Maintain laboratory equipment lockers for students, chemical inventory, and supplies used in teaching laboratories.
6. Instruct students on proper sample preparation for samples submitted for further analysis.
7. Meet laboratory preparation deadlines and ensure accurate laboratory preparation.
8. Consult regularly with laboratory coordinators to ensure the smooth operation of teaching laboratories.
9. Consult with the Safety Officer to ensure compliance with safety procedures.
10. Oversee students working in laboratories outside scheduled times by arrangement with the faculty member in charge and permission of the Safety Officer.
11. Provide resource support for lecture demonstrations and assist with equipment and chemical supply.
12. Supervise visiting students from local grade and/or high schools.
13. Serve as a resource person for undergraduate students, teaching assistants, laboratory coordinators, course instructors, and other technicians.
14. Assist with installing teaching-related equipment.
Required Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will require:
1. A 3-year college diploma in chemistry with 2 years of on-the-job training.
2. Knowledge of all areas of chemistry.
3. Specialized training in NMR, UV-Vis, IR, GC, HPLC, etc., gained through manufacturer's training and researchers in the applicable field.
4. Knowledge of computers, software, and interfacing techniques for data acquisition systems.
5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
6. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
7. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions
This position requires:
1. Daily handling of potentially hazardous chemicals.
2. Exposure to various chemicals due to undergraduate experiments.
3. Multitasking in a fast-paced environment.
4. Flexibility in scheduling individual experiments.
5. Working alone in hazardous conditions.
Compensation and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary of $55,000-$65,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits including comprehensive health and dental insurance, RRSP matching, and paid vacation time.
