Position Overview

The role of a registered nurse in mental health involves the assessment and management of patients facing actual or potential health challenges. This includes fostering a purposeful therapeutic alliance between the nurse, the patient, and their family. As a pivotal figure in the healthcare team, the professional nurse is entrusted with the responsibility, authority, and accountability for orchestrating, coordinating, and appraising the care requirements of patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assessment: Collects and organizes comprehensive information relevant to the patient's health status. Engages the patient, family, and other healthcare professionals in a systematic approach to identify needs and patterns. Utilizes evidence-based assessment methodologies.
  • Diagnosis: Evaluates assessment data to establish nursing diagnoses. Interprets information to ascertain each patient's needs, considering age, development, and cultural background. Communicates and documents nursing diagnoses in accordance with patient care protocols.
  • Outcomes Identification: Determines expected outcomes tailored to the individual patient. Collaborates with the patient and family to set realistic and measurable goals based on nursing diagnoses and available resources.
  • Planning: Formulates a care plan that prescribes interventions aimed at achieving the expected outcomes. Develops an individualized strategy that reflects patient characteristics and promotes continuity of care.
  • Implementation: Executes the established care plan in a safe and timely manner. Utilizes evidence-based interventions and coordinates care delivery as necessary.
  • Evaluation: Assesses the patient's progress towards the established outcomes. Engages the patient and family in the evaluation process and revises the care plan as needed.
  • Quality of Practice: Actively enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice through participation in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Education: Pursues knowledge and skills that reflect current nursing practices and engages in educational opportunities.
  • Professional Practice Evaluation: Regularly evaluates personal nursing practice against professional standards and seeks feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Collegiality: Supports the professional growth of peers and contributes to a collaborative work environment.
  • Collaboration: Works alongside patients, families, and other professionals to facilitate effective nursing practice.
  • Ethics: Upholds ethical standards and maintains professional boundaries while advocating for patients.
  • Research: Integrates research findings into practice to inform decision-making.
  • Resource Utilization: Manages resources effectively to ensure safe and ethical patient care.
  • Leadership: Demonstrates leadership within the professional setting and promotes a positive work culture.
  • Environmental Health: Practices in a manner that promotes environmental safety and health.
  • Charge Nurse Responsibilities: When designated, coordinates unit operations to meet patient and family needs efficiently.
  • Preceptor Responsibilities: When designated, mentors new staff and facilitates their professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's or Vocational degree from an accredited nursing program.
  • 0 to 2 years of experience as a registered nurse.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited nursing program.
  • Experience in a specialty area is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Active Registered Nurse license in the state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support certification required within a specified timeframe.
  • Additional certifications may be necessary based on specialty.

Physical Demands

The role may involve medium work, including lifting weights up to 32 lbs occasionally and up to 25 lbs frequently.
