Position Overview

Compensation Details:

Salary Range: The starting salary for this role is between $69,052 and $76,129, as per the PEA Collective Agreement.

Performance Range: There is potential for salary progression up to a maximum of $89,791 based on annual performance evaluations.

Role Summary:

The Vice President Research and Innovation (VPRI) portfolio encompasses various units, including the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation (OVPRI), Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) Unit, and the Office of Research Services. The OVPRI is tasked with overseeing UVic's research strategy, establishing strategic priorities, and leading initiatives to foster research growth and sustainability.

The Research Agreements Facilitator (RAF), reporting to the Manager of Research Agreements, plays a crucial role in reviewing external research funding contracts and agreements related to research and intellectual property generated by the University. Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparation, interpretation, and negotiation of contracts.
  • Administration and implementation of University policies and guidelines concerning research and intellectual property.
  • Providing expert advice and contributing to the development of standardized templates for common research and intellectual property agreements.
  • Liaising with external contracting agencies and facilitating internal communication regarding University policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess an undergraduate degree and a minimum of three years of experience in contract review and drafting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A paralegal certificate is advantageous.

Essential skills and experiences include:

  • Proven experience in contract negotiation, with a solid understanding of the legal framework surrounding contracts.
  • Familiarity with legal terminology and concepts pertinent to research contracting.
  • Experience with international agreements and knowledge of intellectual property rights and risks associated with ownership and usage.

The successful applicant must demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects effectively, prioritize tasks, and make informed decisions under changing deadlines. Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential.

Preference will be given to candidates with strong database management skills, significant experience in contract negotiation, and knowledge of university policies related to contracts and agreements, including Intellectual Property, Liability, and Insurance.
