Licensed Practical Nurse - Surgical Services

Responsibilities for Ensuring Quality Care

Effectively managing a diverse workload in a dynamic setting. Proactively addressing and resolving challenges in a constructive and respectful manner. Exercising sound professional judgment while adhering to best practice guidelines. Promoting a safe and inclusive atmosphere for all by complying with patient and staff safety protocols.

Required Qualifications

Diploma in Practical Nursing from an accredited program is preferred. Valid Certificate of Registration in the General Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario is mandatory. For graduates prior to 1995, a medication administration certificate from an accredited community college is required. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is essential.

Additional Qualifications

Demonstrated clinical experience in patient-centered care, including robust patient assessment, care planning, education, and documentation capabilities. Must exhibit the physical strength, flexibility, and endurance necessary to fulfill the role, as assessed by the Occupational Health and Safety Department. A minimum of 2 years of recent experience in inpatient surgery, day surgery, or emergency care is required. Familiarity with electronic medical records is essential. Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, and the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario is advantageous. Excellent interpersonal, listening, verbal, and written communication skills in English, with the ability to effectively engage with patients, families, and colleagues. Proven decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities. Demonstrated initiative and adaptability to new or unforeseen circumstances. Commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth.

Preferred Attributes

Operating Room Certification. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. Recent experience in Endoscopy, Urology, and Pediatric surgery. Completion of a physical assessment course is preferred. Membership in the Registered Practical Nurses' Association of Ontario (RPNAO) or Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) is an asset. Experience in an ambulatory clinic setting is beneficial. Proficiency in a second language is a plus.
