Registered Practical Nurse - Emergency Services

As a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), you will adopt a patient- and family-centered methodology in delivering comprehensive, high-quality, and secure care to individuals within the professional boundaries defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario, alongside evidence-based nursing practices and the standards established by Mackenzie Health. By collaborating effectively as part of the interprofessional care team, you will play a vital role in crafting a premier health experience for patients and their families during every interaction, showcasing professionalism, embodying our Commitment to Caring, and upholding our core values of excellence, leadership, and empathy.

Your Contributions to Quality Care Include:

  • Delivering culturally sensitive care to patients with clearly defined and established complex care requirements, who exhibit predictable outcomes and manageable responses.
  • Evaluating patients to identify alterations in their condition and/or needs, and communicating these to the relevant team members.
  • Administering and documenting therapeutic interventions and medications in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Serving as an advocate for patients.
  • Engaging in continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Certificate of Registration in the General Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • If graduated prior to 1995, a Medication Administration Certificate from an accredited community college.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Completion of Coronary Care Course 1, or a commitment to complete within one year of hire.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience with patient-centered care, including robust patient assessment, care planning, patient education, and documentation skills.

  • Understanding and adherence to patient and staff safety policies and procedures that promote a secure and inclusive environment for all.
  • Familiarity with the Regulated Health Professions Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, and the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Practical Nurse Diploma from an accredited nursing program.
  • Membership in the Registered Practical Nurses' Association of Ontario (RPNAO).
  • At least one year of recent nursing experience as a Registered Practical Nurse in an acute care environment within the last three years.
  • One year of experience in Emergency or Telemetry settings.
  • Two years of experience in Medicine/Surgical nursing.
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) certification.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) course preferred, or equivalent training.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
  • Previous experience in the Registered Practical Nurse role.
