Job Summary

Dr. Emily Brigham is a mid-career faculty member at the University in the Division of Respiratory Medicine. She is the PI of SALVE (Strategic Approaches to Lung Vitality in the Environment) Lab, with multiple ongoing projects at UBC with a continuously growing research program surrounding strategies to mitigate the impact of air pollution exposures on respiratory health. More specifically, her work focuses on wildfire smoke and impacts on respiratory health across the lifespan, as well as interventions (including diet and behavioral change) to build resilience and protect lung health. She has ongoing collaborations with multiple researchers across Canada and the US and is supported by the Legacy for Airway Health ). The Research Coordinator (RC) will manage SALVE Lab activities, including research assistant hires, supervision of trainee activities, and building of the research program.

The Research Coordinator will manage all lab activities and provide supervision for additional staff and trainees within the lab. This includes but is not limited to coordination of activities, composition and maintenance of regulatory documents, support in composition and construction of funding applications, budget management, research lab meeting coordination and leadership, along with direct participation in research activities including protocol development and execution, participant engagement and consent, and if desired authorship and professional society meeting attendance.

Organizational Status
This position reports directly to Dr. Brigham, Principal Investigator (PI). Interactions with other research partners and liaison with other departments within the university as needed.

Work Performed

Laboratory/Clinical Duties:

  • Coordinates the implementation of research protocols and study procedures for enrolled patients in accordance with skills and education and Good Clinical Practice. This will include but is not limited to supervising and assuring successful completion of patient follow-up visits, diagnostic procedures, data entry, data queries, sample collection, etc.
  • Provides advice on recruitment (including the operationalizing of new recruitment streams and the development of timelines), eligibility, survey choice and deployment, lab procedures, and data extraction, ensuring appropriate and detailed documentation as a component of supervisory role.
  • Overall responsibility for data storage structures, specifically overseeing data entry by all research staff, and maintaining protocols and directing practices related to data security and privacy. protocols and directs practices regarding data security and privacy. This includes providing data security training for lab members.
  • Identifies workforce gaps and collaborates with the PI on developing funding and budget, creating job and studentship descriptions, determining candidate eligibility, and coordinating the interview and hiring process.
  • Manages the workflow of the lab and directs project recruitment, administration of staff, budget, training materials and forecasting.
  • Trains incoming staff on procedures related to research protocols, provides supervision for staff in lab operations and safe and responsible conduct of research in line with UBC policy.
  • Manages laboratory and clinic area. Identifies equipment needs and resource needs, funding sources, and coordinates vendor communications. Ensures sufficiency of supplies, cleanliness, and compliance with Risk Management regulations.
  • Develops budgets for new grant applications and assurance of adherence to budgets for ongoing investigations, including liaising with vendors.
  • Identifies funding opportunities applicable to lab mission and supports application development, including staffing considerations and budget management.
  • Plans and performs research activities such as document reviews, drafting research protocols, ethics applications, and manages regulatory documents, data forms, reporting, and obtaining operational approvals.

Administrative Duties:

  • Coordinates financial grant management.
  • Makes recommendations with respect to hiring and onboarding of future team members. Supervises trainees, research assistants, and volunteers. Serves as primary point of contact for these individuals with regards to lab operations.
  • Drafts presentations and collaborates in the preparation of lectures for research and public publications.
  • Determines agenda and leads recurrent lab meetings and related events, providing regular updates on research activities and establishing effective communication with all lab members. The PIs lab is translational with multiple stakeholders involved (patient, community, government, non-profit) with responsibilities and relationship-management skills required at a high level. Cultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence in interactions and scheduling is critical to this role to optimize success of operations and maintain these cultivated relationships for the research program.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, database handling, and software and hardware troubleshooting. Able to demonstrate competency to operate study specific equipment. Previous experience in venipuncture is an asset. Self-directed and has the ability to exercise judgment and initiative. Team-oriented, committed and precise. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability. Effective oral and written communication, problem solving, interpersonal, multitasking and excellent organization. Performs as a critical thinker and has the ability to operationalize protocol into a functional study. Demonstrates ability to work effectively and precisely under pressure and time constraint accuracy and attention to detail required. Expected to work collaboratively as part of a team with other clinical research coordinators, hospital staff, attending physicians, support staff, grant and industry sponsors and their representatives, regulatory agents and clinical investigators. Ability to exercise initiative, tact, and discretion are of critical importance. Able to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.

Working Conditions:

This position is primarily at the UBC - Vancouver General Hospital site. It may be necessary to visit other facilities with which the laboratory has collaborations. The dynamic environment may require the incumbent to work early mornings, evenings, and occasionally weekends as needed.
