Overall Responsibilities

This is a 12 week contract covering a leave. Reporting to the Supervisor, Research and Development the Formulation Specialist will be responsible to develop, update and optimize product formulae to ensure they meet all intended design specification, optimal operational parameters and comply with USP/NF, NHP and HPB regulations or other requirements as assigned.




Specific Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Design and build theoretical formulations for estimate cost evaluation
  • Prepare research and development (R&D) prototypes, bench trials, pilot batches and oversee production scale-up operations
  • Determine optimal type and fill material characteristics
  • lnitiate stability studies and monitor results for specification compliance and product improvement
  • Assist in product/equipment validation as required
  • Physical testing and evaluation of R&D products as required
  • Provide technical and troubleshooting assistance to the operation group
  • Provide and or review technical information for other departments as required
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of R&D product development projects
  • Operate, maintain, interpret and summarize data/results from R&D equipment and instruments including but not limited to: tablet presses, blenders, coaters, viscosity, water activity, hardness, friability, particle size and flow testing equipment
  • Research technical information on new and/or existing raw materials and finished products
  • Evaluate chemical and physical properties of new raw materials and make recommendations for approval
  • Other duties and projects as deemed necessary



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Science or Engineering (preferably in Chemistry, Food Science or Pharmacology) from an accredited College and/or University
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years' experience in Research or Product Development, preferably in the Nutraceutical/Pharmaceutical industry or Food industry
  • Experience must include process expertise in gel preparation and oil/wax/PEG formulations
  • Work experience/expertise in liquid, tablet, softgel/tablet coating, or other supplement delivery technologies would be an asset
  • Computer literate, including effective working skills in Word, Excel, MS Project and MS Outlook
  • Knowledge in Statistics and ERP systems would be an asset
  • Energetic, self-motivated and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work overtime to complete projects in a timely fashion as required
  • Effective project prioritization, multi-tasking and communication skills a must
  • Knowledge of GMP, GLP and Health & Safety training an asset
