About the Role

The Department of Psychiatry in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Youth Engagement Coordinator. This is a fixed-term recurring part-time position for approximately 8 months, with the possibility of extension.

The Youth Engagement Coordinator will work closely with government and non-profit agencies across the province, primarily based out of the Mathison Centre at the Foothills Medical Centre. The role involves working during normal business hours, with occasional evening or weekend work required. The position allows for some flexibility to work from home, but travel to study sites across the province will be necessary at different phases of the study.

The Youth Engagement Coordinator will report to the Senior Scientist and be responsible for coordinating youth engagement activities for the CYHSI evaluation. This includes connecting and following up with patient advisors, preparing and updating documents, recruiting new patient advisors, and providing training and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate youth engagement activities for the CYHSI evaluation.
  • Connect and follow up with patient advisors to build trust and commitment to the research program.
  • Prepare and update documents specific to patient advisors.
  • Assist in recruiting new patient advisors for the CYHSI evaluation.
  • Prepare, support, and train new patient advisors to become familiar with their roles and the research process.
  • Help patient advisors identify their needs and expectations in terms of training or support and assist in meeting those needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Identify barriers to patient engagement and assist in addressing or mitigating those barriers.
  • Prepare resources for patient advisors to meet their training needs.
  • Document patient advisor activities related to the research project.
  • Provide training on effective multi-stakeholder team function.
  • Develop, maintain, and facilitate a sound working relationship and communication with patient advisors, researchers, and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate regularly with research teams to report progress, challenges, and improvement opportunities.
  • Provide administrative support for patient advisors and organize meetings and events.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Experience in managing multi-stakeholder relations, volunteer support/management, managing expectations, training, and facilitation.
  • Respects diversity and different opinions.
  • Has an understanding of patient-oriented research and can clearly and genuinely articulate the value of patient engagement in health research.
  • Warm, inviting, and authentic character an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and function as a team member.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience in communicating with different stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines and set priorities.
  • Respects and maintains confidentiality as required in their employment contracts from the University of Calgary and in accordance with provincial privacy laws.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite.
  • Strong working knowledge of University practices, procedures, and systems.
