The City of New Westminster is seeking a seasoned professional to lead its community services division as the Director. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the city's economic development, cultural initiatives, and community partnerships.

About the Role

As a key member of the Senior Management Team, the Director will provide strategic direction and leadership to a team of dedicated professionals. The successful candidate will be responsible for aligning department operations with the city's strategic priorities, ensuring effective communication and collaboration between various divisions.

This position requires a strong leader who can foster a culture of innovation, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Director will embody the principles of anti-oppression, anti-racism, reconciliation, and decolonization, prioritizing Indigenous relationships and community connections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise and consult with senior management and city council on policies, procedures, objectives, programs, and requirements to fulfill the city's vision.
  • Support the CAO in leading the organization and contribute to decision-making that benefits the city.
  • Lead the coordination of economic development, conference service, cultural, and community partnership initiatives.
  • Direct department operations, including budget preparation, people management, and expenditure control.
  • Ensure department policies, plans, activities, and operations align with council's strategic priorities.
  • Oversee policy implementation, project coordination, and program monitoring across department divisions.
  • Represent the city on local, regional, and provincial committees, maintaining a significant community profile.
  • Liaise with external agencies, consultants, contractors, and organizations.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a graduate degree in public administration, community development, or a related field. They will have extensive experience in leadership and administration, preferably in the public sector, with a strong background in economic development, conference services, communications, public engagement, community partnerships, and arts and culture.

The selected individual will demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, human resources practices, and strategic planning skills. They will also showcase ability in managing professional teams, developing operating budgets, and promoting economic improvement.
