The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) serves as a pivotal faculty development unit, collaborating with academic staff and graduate students to enhance the educational mission of the University of Manitoba. The Centre is dedicated to improving teaching practices and scholarship through collaborative efforts, research, and guidance on effective teaching methodologies, curriculum design, and institutional policies that enrich the educational experiences of both students and faculty.

A. POSITION OVERVIEW

  • This role is responsible for leading the Teaching Initiatives and Innovation Team, focusing on the integration of key teaching projects and the promotion of educational innovations across both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. The incumbent will support the Centre in its ongoing initiatives and programming aimed at enhancing teaching and learning. Additionally, this position will involve representation of the Centre on institutional or provincial committees.

B. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Faculty Development, Mentoring, and Consultation (20%)

  • Engage with faculty members to discuss best practices in teaching and learning within higher education.
  • Offer constructive feedback on teaching methodologies and course material design.
  • Provide mentorship to faculty participating in various teaching certification programs.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with faculty to foster a supportive network for teaching development and innovation.
  • Conduct classroom evaluations and provide insights on teaching practices related to priority educational initiatives.

2. Leadership of Teaching Initiatives and Innovation Team (50%)

  • Oversee and guide team members in the creation and execution of educational development experiences linked to priority teaching initiatives.
  • Support the operation and enhancement of various faculty development programs.
  • Supervise the planning and delivery of teaching workshops and related initiatives.
  • Contribute to the design and lead the implementation of faculty development initiatives within the Centre and the broader university community.
  • Manage project teams on designated educational projects, ensuring effective organization and delivery of content.
  • Prepare operational plans for faculty development projects, including timelines and milestones.
  • Delegate consultations and custom workshops to team members.
  • Coordinate the development and updating of teaching resources.
  • Provide HR support and guidance to educational developers, including performance evaluations and tracking of leave.
  • Collaborate with other Centre teams to achieve faculty development project goals.

3. Curriculum Design and Development (20%)

  • Create evidence-based resources for teaching and curriculum development in higher education.
  • Contribute to the Centre's educational programming by developing and updating relevant documents.
  • Research effective practices in higher education to inform resource development.
  • Consult with academic departments on curriculum development and accreditation processes.
  • Assist faculties in the curriculum review and accreditation process.
  • Supervise teams involved in curriculum renewal initiatives.

4. Professional Development (10%)

  • Stay informed about current and emerging trends in educational development and pedagogical practices.

Qualifications (required):

  • Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) and a Master's degree in Education (M.Ed.) or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in program/course development in post-secondary education.
  • Experience in post-secondary teaching across various modalities.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience supervising a team of five or more staff.
