POSITION SUMMARY:

Cowichan Tribes, a prominent First Nations Government Organization, is seeking a Chief Administrative Officer to lead its diverse departments and programs. Serving a community of over 5,300 members, Cowichan Tribes is committed to providing exceptional services through its dedicated workforce of more than 425 employees.

ROLE OBJECTIVE:

The Chief Administrative Officer will report directly to the Chief of Cowichan Tribes and will be tasked with steering the strategic initiatives of all departments, ensuring compliance with Chief and Council directives, relevant legislation, and organizational policies. This role encompasses financial oversight and the management of the Operational Leadership team to guarantee effective service delivery that aligns with the cultural values of the community.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

The position offers a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and a pension plan, which become available after the successful completion of the probationary period. Additional perks include paid training, vacation, and sick leave.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement strategic objectives and performance metrics for Cowichan Tribes.
  • Assess and establish policies that reflect the cultural vision of Cowichan Tribes.
  • Guide the Operational Leadership team in delivering a range of community programs and services.
  • Manage HR functions for direct reports, including performance evaluations and employee development.
  • Balance directives from Chief & Council with community needs.
  • Foster a respectful and trusting environment among Chief and Council, community members, and staff.
  • Ensure succession planning and equitable development opportunities for the Operational Leadership team.
  • Lead the formulation and execution of policies in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Implement Band Council Resolutions and oversee specific projects to enhance organizational efficiency.
  • Engage with various stakeholders and represent Cowichan Tribes in external relations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master's degree in business administration, public administration, First Nations law, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience within a First Nations organization is essential.
  • Preferred experience includes direct reporting to a governing body and demonstrated conflict management skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach.
  • Proficient in conflict resolution and team management.
