Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Tissue/Eye Bank Technologist to contribute to our Eye Bank operations.

This role involves working with a dedicated team focused on the retrieval, processing, preservation, and distribution of human donor tissues.

Key Responsibilities

Execute a range of tasks related to the retrieval and processing of human donor tissues, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team. Manage documentation for potential donors, engage with various stakeholders to evaluate donor medical histories, perform enucleation of suitable eyes, assess tissue quality, coordinate tissue distribution for transplantation, and oversee compliance checks performed by contractors. Maintain responsibilities such as data entry into a computerized tissue inventory system and conduct routine calibration of laboratory equipment and freezers, adhering to established safety protocols. Participate in hospital committees and approved research initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Completion of two years of post-secondary education in a biological science field or certification from the American Association of Tissue Banks or the Eye Bank Association of America. A minimum of two years of recent, relevant experience in a Tissue or Eye Bank setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid BC Driver's license (Class 5) and access to a vehicle are mandatory. Eligibility for certification with the American Association of Tissue Banks and/or the Eye Bank Association of America.

Knowledge & Skills

Comprehensive understanding of tissue and eye culture principles. Proven ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats. Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively with others. Ability to interact positively and supportively with colleagues and stakeholders. Capability to perform under pressure in a dynamic environment. Proficiency in establishing workload priorities in collaboration with team members. Skill in operating relevant equipment. Physical capability to fulfill the duties of the position. Basic computer skills to manage a computerized inventory database system.

Work hours, including days off and work areas, may be subject to change based on operational needs and relevant agreements. Successful candidates may be required to undergo a Criminal Records Review Check.
