Position Overview

The role of the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is pivotal in exemplifying clinical excellence and adhering to the core competencies outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), alongside the policies and procedures established by Southlake Regional Health Centre. The RPN collaborates effectively as a vital member of the healthcare team, delivering direct patient care in accordance with the standards set forth by the College of Nurses of Ontario. These responsibilities influence decision-making regarding care-provider assignments and the necessity for consultation and collaboration among healthcare providers. A commitment to lifelong learning is essential for all nursing professionals.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver patient and family-centered care within the RPN scope of practice, guided by the three-factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Operate in alignment with established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
• Ensure practice is consistent with entry-to-practice competencies, standards, guidelines, and legislation.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team.
• Collaborate with Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex health conditions.
• Work in partnership with other members of the interprofessional healthcare team.
• Provide consultation and clinical support to colleagues as necessary.
• Contribute to the ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
• Assist in the development and implementation of the Plan of Care, evaluating its effectiveness continuously.
• Support the orientation and training of new staff members and students within clinical units.
• Serve as a role model and advocate for integrating safe, best practices into daily operations to ensure exemplary care delivery.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager or delegate.

Qualifications

• Valid RPN certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
• Availability to work 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends.
• Recent experience with pre and post-surgical patients is preferred.
• Proven excellence in both written and verbal communication.
• Strong problem assessment skills.
