About the Education Team:
The AVI South Island Education Team is focused on delivering harm reduction and sex-positive education to various stakeholders, including service providers and individuals with lived experiences. Funded by key health organizations, our team aims to mitigate the spread of sexually transmitted bloodborne infections (STBBIs), enhance access to prevention services, and support those affected by the ongoing drug poisoning crisis. We also promote sexual health through educational initiatives and strive to improve low-barrier, person-centered harm reduction practices.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Health Promotion Casual Educator (Special Focus) plays a vital role in delivering targeted programming and educational support on topics such as:
- Sexual Health (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STBBIs)
- Harm Reduction (substance use and overdose prevention)
- Gender and Sexual Diversity/2SLGBTQIA+ Community
- Queer Disability (both visible and invisible)
Our workshops are designed to elevate community awareness and wellness, aiming to decrease the incidence of HIV, HCV, STBBIs, and other related infections, particularly for those at high risk.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the design and updating of educational workshops.
- Facilitate presentations and workshops effectively.
- Provide coverage for workshops and presentations as needed.
- Deliver prevention strategies to enhance community awareness.
- Maintain current knowledge related to specialized topics.
- Participate in the planning, execution, and evaluation of educational activities.
- Keep accurate records and reports on program activities.
- Support educational events such as PRIDE and Hep-C Day.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training, and Experience:
- Experience related to HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Gender Identity, Substance Use, and Sexual Health.
- Demonstrated background in community development and support.
- Proficiency in designing and delivering workshops using various technological tools.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is an asset.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Comprehensive understanding of HIV/AIDS, HCV, STBBIs, and harm reduction principles.
- Strong public speaking and facilitation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Capacity to build rapport with team members and community stakeholders.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Commitment to harm reduction practices and principles.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including those affected by substance use and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
POSITION DETAILS:
This is a casual position with variable hours based on departmental needs. Compensation starts at $30.20/hour, with potential increases based on seniority. The role operates within a unionized environment, adhering to collective agreements.
