Job Summary

The City of Ottawa's Cultural and Heritage Programs department is seeking a skilled Heritage Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and delivering interpretive and educational programs at our historic sites and museums.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver interpretive and educational programs for diverse audiences
  • Conduct historical research and project writing
  • Assist with promotional activities and community outreach
  • Liaise with volunteers, community groups, and facility user groups
  • Supervise and train summer staff
  • Provide excellent customer service and respond to public inquiries
Requirements
  • Enrolled in a university or college program in history, social sciences, museum studies, education, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 2 years of interpretive experience in a museum environment, or 2 years of experience teaching in a school environment, or 1 year of experience in historical research and project writing
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR, and/or AED certificates
  • AODA Customer Service/IASR Training
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Ottawa's historical sites, museums, archives, and other heritage institutions
  • Understanding of current trends in museum educational programs
  • Proper museological techniques for the handling and display of artifacts
  • Interpretive techniques
  • Ontario School curriculum
  • Client service needs
  • Project management
  • MS Office software, including MS Word and MS Excel
