Job Summary

The City of Ottawa is seeking a skilled Heritage Programming Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Cultural and Heritage Programs department, you will be responsible for developing and delivering interpretive and educational programs at our historic sites and museums.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver heritage programming to Museum users, working closely with Education and Interpretation Programs Officers.
  • Conduct historical research for educational and promotional purposes.
  • Prepare and coordinate heritage programming materials and supplies.
  • Provide excellent customer service, answering public inquiries and responding to genealogy research and site history questions.
  • Perform reception and clerical duties, including program bookings, mailings, reservations, and confirmations.
Requirements
  • Completion of 2 years of university or college in History, Social Sciences, Museum Studies, Education, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of interpretive or educational experience in a museum environment or 2 years of teaching experience in a school environment.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in historical research and project writing or 1 year of experience in a heritage trade.
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR, and/or AED certificates, as well as AODA Customer Service/IASR Training.
Competencies, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrable skill in heritage trade(s).
  • Excellent communication, promotional, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead, coordinate, and supervise staff, as well as manage budgets and make decisions.
  • Flexibility and ability to cope with a changing working environment.
  • Leadership, initiative, and creativity.
Language Requirements

Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only, or bilingual competencies.

Police Record Check

The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa's satisfaction.
