JOB SUMMARY

The Cultural and Heritage Programs division oversees a range of multi-disciplinary arts centers, heritage sites, and museum facilities. This includes the execution of public programming and events related to arts, heritage, and museums, alongside volunteer program development and audience engagement initiatives.

Your responsibilities encompass:

  • Development and delivery of interpretive and educational programs at the City of Ottawa's historical sites and museums.
  • Ongoing contributions to heritage projects, including the preparation and organization of programming materials and resources.
  • Conducting historical research for educational and promotional purposes.
  • Collaborating with Education and Interpretation Programs Officers to create and implement heritage programming for museum visitors.
  • Addressing public inquiries, including genealogy research and historical questions, while providing information and performing clerical duties as necessary.

Heritage programming may involve activities such as:

  • Operations of print shops, sawmills, and pump factories.
  • Blacksmithing, carpentry, and animal husbandry.
  • Farming practices and the operation of heritage agricultural equipment, including vintage tractors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants should possess:

  • A minimum of 2 years of university or college education in History, Social Sciences, Museum Studies, Education, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of interpretive or educational experience within a museum context, or 2 years of teaching experience in an educational setting.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in historical research and project writing, or in a heritage trade.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Required certifications include:

  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR, and/or AED certificates.
  • AODA Customer Service/IASR Training.

KNOWLEDGE

Ideal candidates will have knowledge in:

  • Historical facts and information pertaining to Ottawa.
  • Ottawa's heritage sites, museums, archives, and other cultural institutions.
  • Educational and interpretive programming methodologies.
  • Practical skills in heritage trades.
  • Theories and practices of education.
  • Ontario School curriculum.
  • Proper museological techniques for artifact handling and display.
  • Current trends in museum educational programs.
  • Client service requirements.
  • Project management principles.
  • MS Office software, including Word and Excel.
  • Visitor center operations and procedures.
  • Applicable health and safety legislation.
