We are seeking a Clinical Risk Management Supervisor with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)
Reporting to the Director of Risk Management, this role is pivotal in steering the management of clinical operational risks. The Clinical Risk Management Supervisor will take a proactive approach in collaborating with organizational leadership to manage critical incidents and high-risk scenarios. This position is also responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures that enhance patient care and ensure employee safety. The Supervisor will liaise with external legal advisors on claims and work with insurers regarding potential claims.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and support to senior management, healthcare professionals, and staff in the identification, analysis, and mitigation of risks through effective risk management strategies. Advocate for and contribute to the planning and coordination of risk assessment processes, supporting regional initiatives and the development of policies and decision-making tools. Advise the Patient Care Quality Office on escalated complaints that may increase risk exposure for VCH. Facilitate the Critical Incident Review process, guiding clinical and operational leaders through chart reviews and staff interviews to identify findings and recommendations. Serve as a subject matter expert, providing consultative guidance to organizational committees and implementation groups. Offer consultation to program leaders regarding complex clinical situations that involve litigation and reputational risk. Represent VCH in discussions with external legal counsel and insurers regarding complex claims involving patients or the organization. Collaborate with external partners and agencies in navigating complex client situations, including law enforcement and health authority partners. Assist in developing clinical risk registers to support strategic planning for the department and organization. Create effective systems and methods for managing administrative and operational risks, ensuring consistent application across the health authority. Investigate claims, prepare risk assessments, and consult with legal counsel while monitoring external legal expenses. Support senior leadership in investigating critical incidents and coroner issues. Facilitate training and education on risk management topics, including risk assessments and disclosure processes. Supervise administrative staff, fostering a respectful and motivating work environment. Adhere to health and safety requirements, reporting unsafe situations promptly. Qualifications
Education & Experience
Master's Degree in a Clinical Health Care field, Health Care Administration, Juris Doctor Degree, or a related discipline. Five (5) to seven (7) years of recent experience in progressive leadership roles focused on organizational risk and critical incident management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Registration with the applicable professional association is preferred.Knowledge & Skills
Proven ability to coordinate strategies and processes to minimize organizational risk through effective claims management and collaboration. Strong analytical skills to assess and support risk management activities and implement quality improvement strategies. Experience conducting timely risk assessments and consulting with leaders on risk issues. Excellent judgment and communication skills to handle sensitive information and negotiate with stakeholders. Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external partners, promoting services with sensitivity to diversity.
