This position is with our Good Shepherd - Women's Services - Dorothy Day


Your Impact

Dorothy Day Place offers low-barrier permanent supportive housing for cis women, trans, and non-binary individuals who have faced chronic homelessness. Our program is designed to create a welcoming and respectful environment for those encountering significant personal and systemic barriers to securing and maintaining housing. We prioritize cultural safety and a Trans/Gender positive space.

  • A strong commitment to the values of responsibility, availability, adaptability, quality, and dignity
  • Collaborate with program participants to create personalized care plans, assist in developing and maintaining safety plans, and promote community integration through participant-driven self-help and special interest initiatives
  • Provide supportive counseling, education, and information regarding trauma, mental health, and harm reduction
  • Engage in complex care planning meetings and case conferences with relevant clinical and community supports, and accompany participants to community-based appointments
  • Ensure a hospitable and dignified environment that supports availability and accessibility
  • Exhibit flexibility in work execution to respond to participant and organizational needs, adapting to a dynamic environment
  • Participate in Good Shepherd's Health and Safety programs, adhering to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to minimize risks to clients, staff, and property

Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in the social service sector
  • Ability to apply feminist, client-directed, anti-oppression, and anti-racism frameworks along with harm reduction principles
  • Understanding of Hamilton's broader Housing and Homelessness serving sector, particularly knowledge of Coordinated Access
  • Essential knowledge, skills, and experience to support a culturally safe and Trans/Gender positive service/residential environment
  • Preferred experience in a residential setting
  • A valid Ontario Driver's License (G2) and capability to operate a company vehicle is an asset
  • Awareness and understanding of issues affecting cis women, trans, and non-binary individuals, including abuse, poverty, homelessness, mental health, and substance use
  • Valid CPR certification (or willingness to obtain certification)
  • Proven ability to work with individuals with diverse and complex health and psycho-social needs
  • Commitment to anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices, aligned with the mission and values of Good Shepherd
  • Fluency in a language other than English is an asset
  • Understanding of workplace health and safety practices and employee responsibilities under current legislation
