Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Administrative Manager, the Research Initiatives Coordinator for the Hallman Chair is responsible for the daily oversight of project operations, which includes budgeting, strategic planning, grant writing, and providing leadership to a team of Research Assistants. This role is integral to the execution of research and development projects in partnership with the Chair, independent research teams, community stakeholders, and professionals in the field. The Coordinator collaborates with the Chair to develop research tools, prepare grant submissions, conduct field research, analyze findings, and produce research reports, summary documents, and related academic publications for diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities

Research Management

Supervise the advancement of research projects to achieve medium and long-term objectives by ensuring adherence to research and administrative protocols, coordinating data collection efforts, and proactively addressing challenges to maintain data integrity. Lead a team of research assistants, monitoring their progress on assigned tasks through tracking hours and deliverables. Contribute to the strategic development of research initiatives and outline proposed research activities. Identify research priorities and formulate short, medium, and long-term objectives and action plans. Anticipate and mobilize necessary resources to support the Hallman Research Chair's objectives, including seeking external funding opportunities. Facilitate the preparation and submission of external funding applications (e.g., SSHRC, provincial Ministry competitions, international funding opportunities). Develop and implement best practices for all phases of research studies, including participant recruitment, data collection, analysis, reporting, and dissemination. Design, test, and implement data collection instruments such as interview guides and questionnaires. Prepare necessary documentation for university REB applications, funder progress reports, and other research-related activities. Consult with the Research Office regarding ethics reviews and external funding proposals.

Data Analysis & Reporting

Conduct comprehensive data analyses for various research projects. Create and maintain databases to monitor research activities, including participant recruitment and data collection. Engage in the design, collection, analysis, and reporting of both qualitative and quantitative research data. Collect data through surveys, interviews, or document reviews. Analyze data utilizing software programs such as SPSS or NVIVO. Collaborate in the drafting of research reports and other publications, including multimedia outputs (videos, presentations, etc.). Assist in writing research proposals to secure external funding and complete internal ethical review submissions. Produce research reports for both academic and non-academic audiences, ensuring accuracy in references, editing, and formatting. Synthesize research findings into accessible dissemination products, including final reports and journal articles.

Financial Management

Responsible for long-term financial planning related to project activities. Develop operating budgets for various research initiatives. Manage financial resources across multiple research projects by reconciling projected budgets with actual expenditures. Provide monthly budget reports to the Chair comparing budgeted versus actual expenses. Collaborate with Central & Research Finance, Procurement, and the Administrative Manager on budgetary matters and purchases.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

Foster productive relationships with research partners, including community organizations, research participants, professional associations, and academic institutions. Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats, including research work plans, implementation activities, and final reports.

Reporting Structure

This Position Reports to: Administrative Manager with functional oversight from the Hallman Research Chair.

Provides guidance to a team of 1-5 research assistants.

Qualifications

Master's degree in social sciences or a related field. 2-3 years of experience managing university or community-based research projects, including goal-setting, planning, resource allocation, and budgeting. Applied knowledge of research methodologies and ethics in social sciences. Proven experience in writing targeted documents (e.g., funding applications, peer-reviewed articles, final reports). Strong analytical skills to devise innovative solutions to challenges. Organizational abilities to develop and maintain research protocols. Capacity to manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines. Proficiency in word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Office 365), spreadsheets (e.g., Excel), video conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom), and specialized data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, SPSS). Familiarity with various social media platforms. Knowledge of child welfare or children's mental health is an asset. Excellent writing skills.

Work Schedule

This is a part-time, ongoing position with regular hours of 24 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Flexibility in hours may be necessary during peak periods, with adjustments made to ensure no more than 24 hours are worked weekly.

Compensation

Job Level: E

Pay Rate: $42.17 per hour, with annual step progression to $45.59.

Considerations for new hire step placements include qualifications, experience, market rates for similar roles, internal equity, and the anticipated learning curve.
